Built a new PC but...

Hi, I just bought a bunch of parts from newegg.com and built a system for my parents. Its my first Intel build and third build ever, but I'm having issues after booting. The system is as follows:

HEC mATX Case w/585 Watt PS - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Prod [...] 6811121004

Foxconn M7VMX-K LGA 775 NVIDIA GeForce 7050 / nForce 610i Micro ATX Intel Motherboard - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Prod [...] 6813186138

Intel Pentium E2200 Allendale 2.2GHz 1MB L2 Cache LGA 775 65W Dual-Core Processor

G.SKILL 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory - Retail - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Prod [...] 6820231122

WD 320 GB HDD

and an old TDK 440N DVD-RW.

I already looked at Intel's website about systems not booting (http://www.intel.com/support/motherb.../CS-010254.htm) and tested all of their solutions and I still get no video when the PC boots.

I am going to be using the on board video graphics as well. Right now I'm thinking that's the problem with the board and I may just need to go get a PCI-x graphics card. I also tried using two different monitors and got nothing. Another thing that might be worth mentioning is that it does not even beep when I turn it on; the fans spin, I hear the HDD spin, and the DVD and HDD lights on the front stay lit. Anyone know what the significance of the HDD and DVD-rom lights staying lit is and why I would be unable to open the DVD-rom after power, even though the light and fans are on?

I would really appreciate it if anyone could give me some advice or tips on how to go on to fix this thing, I feel like I've taken it apart and rebuilt it a couple times already with the same results. I'm just hoping I didn't short anything while in the process even though I did have an anti-static bracelet on the whole time though, connected to the case.

I've tried clearing the CMOS and that produced the same results. And I've already tried taking everything out of the case and putting it on a non-conductive surface (the anti static packaging). plugging in all of the necessary parts (CPU, CPU HSF, 1 memory stick, HD, DVD Drive) and turning it on from there, which also produced the same results.

I went and bought a PCI-express video card at Best Buy cause I don't want to wait for one to ship, even if its cheaper, to see if a video card would work. I haven't opened it yet though because one of the associates as Best Buy said I could try leaving it on for an hour or so to see if anything comes up afterward. He also said if that didn't work, then I should just send it back.

So before I open up the video card or send the mobo back, are there any other suggestions anyone can think of?

Before someone asks, yes, the 4-pin CPU connector is plugged in correctly and yes, the 20+4 pin PSU connector is plugged in correctly also.

If there's any other information you need to know, please let me know.

Re: Built a new PC but...

What kind of hard drive, IDE or Sata? You gave a nice History, but forgot to be very explicit in what it does. When you push that on button, what happens? What stays on? How long does it stay on? What doesn't stay on? Just be very clear on what we are dealing with.

Re: Built a new PC but...

Its a SATA drive, the DVD-rom is using the only IDE slot. When I push the on button, the fans (CPU HS and rear fan) turn on, the DVD-ROM and HDD lights turn on and stay on. I can also hear the hard drive turn on. The system stays on until I turn it off by holding down the power button for 5 seconds. The only thing that does not respond is the monitor. I've tried it on two different monitors, both Samsung though since that's all I have (different models though).

Re: Built a new PC but...

do you get a successful single beep from post?
Have you tried using a known good video cable or tried using the cable you have on a known working machine?
It's good to hear the hard drive spin up.

I know it sounds crazy but I had a build that didn't have a speaker to sound beep codes and it did exactly as you describe. The cable I was using was a DVI to HDMI and it was the only one I had. Out of frustration I took the box to a local shop and they charged me like 40 bucks to tell me nothing was wrong with my computer. I had a bad video cable that had worked just two days earlier.

Re: Built a new PC but...

Both of the video cables were VGA cables that I've been using for the past 5-10 years and haven't had problems with.

Re: Built a new PC but...

It doesn't post, I can't get video when I press the power button. I don't hear any beeps, but the fans run and HDD and DVD-ROM lights light up. I just switched out power supplies with my old system and that did not work either. I placed the new power supply in my system and its working fine.

Re: Built a new PC but...

Try taking the motherboard out and hooking everything up out of the case. It may be shorting on a standoff

Re: Built a new PC but...

What power supply are you using?
Try the bench test as stated above> How to Bench Test Your System

Re: Built a new PC but...

If the motherboard is shorting on a standoff, does that mean its permanently damaged or will it stop shorting if its not touching a standoff anymore?

Re: Built a new PC but...

Found out what was wrong with the system. First of all, let me reiterate that its been about 5-6 years since I've built a system. Secondly, you're all gonna laugh at what was wrong, I hope. Turns out that I didn't remove the black plastic protector cap on the bottom of the processor when I seated it. I found this out after I took everything out and went from scratch. I was so glad that it still worked afterward though! I'm using the system right now, its been on for about 7 hours, with nothing going wrong. Thanks everyone for their helpful advice!
