Primary Hard Disk Drive 0 not found

When i boot my machine i get " Primary Hard Disk Drive 0 not found and Primary Hard Disk Drive 1 not found ". I took out the HD and plugged it into another computer via usb and it looked fine, i even reformated and stuck it back in the PC but no fix. so i put another HD in the pc, still no fix. i tried changing the cable, nothing. i CAN boot from CD-Rom. went into the bios, doesnt read the any hard drives. i also done the ALT+E ALT+B ALT+F and let it reboot but still didnt help. the computer is a dell, bios is phoenix version 1.10 A04. like i said booting from the Cd-rom is fine because i tried to reinstall windows but it too also could not find and hard disk. im not sure what else i can do. i assume it must be something in the mobo but i have no idea how to find out other then this process of elimination.

Re: Primary Hard Disk Drive 0 not found

Look in the bios to see if the drive is recognized. Also, when in there, migrate to the Boot area and see if a hard drive is listed in the Hard Drive Priority area. If so, then make the boot drive FIRST.

Re: Primary Hard Disk Drive 0 not found

In your bios go to the area that detects your hard drive and CD device, try pressing enter on auto or user setting to detect your hard drive. Make sure your jumper settings are correct on your hard drive and CD device. You may need an 80 pin connector for your hard drive to motherboard. You may have tried some of these tips already. Good luck!

Re: Primary Hard Disk Drive 0 not found

I have tried all above.. :( its hard telling what it could be. i figured it couldnt hurt to ask. I just assume that its a bad mobo. everything on it looks fine and clean. no swollen or busted caps, no crud.

Re: Primary Hard Disk Drive 0 not found

Have you tried hooking the hard drive to the other controller?

Re: Primary Hard Disk Drive 0 not found

I plugged the drive externaly into another machine via usb cable. It spun right up and let me access it. I plugged in 2 other different drives into the broke machine and it still wont read the drives.

Re: Primary Hard Disk Drive 0 not found

extra info, the mobo only has conectors for a cd-room,floopy and a hard drive. even though the cd-rom and floopy works i decided to mix them up a little bit to see if the HD would run off the other ones. the only other conector that the HD cable would fit with was the floopy conector so i plugged it in and got only 1 error saying the floopy was not install or something like that. the HD cable would not fit in the cd-rom conector so i just hooked it back up to normal.

Current settings:

Diskette Drive A: ...................... 3.5 inch, 1.44 MB

Primary Drive 0 ......................... Unknown Device
Primary Drive 1 ........................ OFF
Secondary Drive 0 ..................... CD-Rom Reader
Secondary Drive 1 ..................... OFF

Boot Sequnce - enabled 1. IDE cd-rom device
enabled 2. Diskette drive

IDE Drive Interface ............... Auto
Diskette Interface ................ Auto

Re: Primary Hard Disk Drive 0 not found

Try hooking the hard drive to the secondary IDE channel on the end of the cable with the jumpers on the drive set to master put the cd drive on the middle of the cable with the jumpers set to slave. Then set Secondary Drive 1 to on in the Bios see if it will boot from the hard drive.

Re: Primary Hard Disk Drive 0 not found

The ribbon cable that plugs into the CD drive should have 3 plugs on it put the hard drive on the end where the cd drive is now set the jumpers on the hard drive to master their should be a picture on the drive showing you where the jumper goes, set the jumper on the cd drive to slave again should be a picture on the drive plug it into the center plug on the cable the other end is plugged into the motherboard, enter the Bios set Secondary Drive 1 .....................ON save and reboot if IDE controller 1 has failed there is a good chance it will boot off IDE controller 2 Each IDE Controller Supports 2 drives for a total of 4 right now you only have 1 drive on each or 2 total drives you're just moving the hard drive to the second controller.
