computer doesnt boot up after installing ram

Hi, I recently installed a 2gig stick of Elixir Ram onto my motherboard which is GA-VM800PMC and it wont boot; all i get is a beeping noise coming from the PC. However once I place my 512mb Ram stick back in, its working again. I checked the memory compatibility list on the gigabyte website- but it only lists RAM couple of years. Is it that my RAM is incompatible with my motherboard, or could it be somthing else?

Re: computer doesnt boot up after installing ram

No its not something else, the beeps indicate the system can't find usable memory so either the stick is bad or its not compatible.

Can you provide a link to the ram?

Re: computer doesnt boot up after installing ram

Dont worry, I just googled it and found out that it isnt compatible.
Supposedly, you should avoid elixir ram as it isnt compatible on most motherboards. That was a waste of $35

Just asking- I had thought that nowadays there wouldn't be a compatibility issues with RAM, obviously not, but if I say bought something more well known ie. kingston RAM- would it likely to work?

Edit: I just looked at the compatibility list again, and it shows that elixir 512mb 667mhz Ram would work? Does that mean that the motherboard is picky on the type of RAM not just the brand?

Re: computer doesnt boot up after installing ram

The best way to check is to go to the ram manufacturer's site and put your motherboard model into a ram configurator there. They'll list the ram that is guaranteed to work in your board. Corsair, Crucial, OCZ, Kingston all have them. If I was at home I'd do some links as I have them bookmarked there.

Re: computer doesnt boot up after installing ram

the problem with that is that my motherboard is probably 3-4 years old so they don't have it in their databases.

Is there any other way to know what RAM is compatible with my motherboard?

Edit: just another unrelated question. When in the motherboard specifications, if it says DDR2 667/533/400, does that mean it cant support DDR2 800 RAM?

Crucial - http://www.crucial.com/store/listpar...el=GA-VM800PMC

The other 3 didn't list your board, though Kingston was close.

Re: computer doesnt boot up after installing ram

Okay another question- will I have a better chance of compatibility if say I buy 2x1gb pack? I read in some forum that motherboards are less picky with RAMs less than 2gb, and should generally work?

Re: computer doesnt boot up after installing ram

You don't have to get Crucial ram from the US, they sell it all over. You go to the configurator to get the model numbers and then find them somewhere else.
Should be in your manual, but just in case you don't have it, here's the QVL for your board. http://www.gigabyte.com.tw/FileList/...a-vm800pmc.pdf

Re: computer doesnt boot up after installing ram

The specifications for your motherboard indicate it only supports a maximum of 1GB per socket. http://www.gigabyte.com.tw/Products/...me=GA-VM800PMC

For the majority of boards, you have to fill all sockets to reach the maximum. On your board with two DDR2 sockets, 1GB per socket is the max.

Although your exact board is not listed, Kingston does have the GA-8VM800PMD-775 listed on their configurator. It has almost the exact same chipset and supports the same memory as yours. http://www.ec.kingston.com/ecom/conf...submit1=Search

Do a Google search for the area you are in using the recommended the part numbers you are interested in to find a reseller you can buy from.
