asus p4p800 deluxe MB - ethernet controller

I restored a previous fully operational xp-sp2 on my pc. When Windows opens up, it cannot find a driver for the ethernet controller.

On the Asus site, I found no specific driver available (865pe chipset). On the Intel site there is a long list of Ethernet Controllers but I don't know which one I should select.

Everest appeared to point to a 3com 3c940 Ethernet controller. I got the driver for it and applied it. The request for an Ethernet Controller disappeared but I still have no connection to my ADSL router.

FYI, I use a Surecom adapter.

Re: asus p4p800 deluxe MB - ethernet controller

I installed the 3com driver v0046 and the request for ethernet controller disappeared. However there is still no connection. I also ran the inf utility you mentioned.

I used several times ich5 drivers in the past when I carried out reinstallations with this MB. This time, it rejected the inf's I had on the diskette when I inserted it for the ethernet controller request..

In the device mgr, I just noticed that my 2 optical disks have exclamation marks on yellow background attached to them while they are perfectly recognized by the BIOS at startup. I got a similar situation a while back. This was due to a virus. I just ran Avast with the latest signature updates to no avail.

I uninstalled the 1st device and Windows was unable to reinstall it.

Re: asus p4p800 deluxe MB - ethernet controller

sounds like your drivers are rather well balled up

you can try to uninstall the ethernet driver you have and then install the correct one

worse case senario ........ perform a win xp repair install ........ this will only remove all drivers from the windows system and allow you to start driver install from scratch ....... always do the chipset first ! then the others

http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/XP...install.htm#RI

this wont mess with your programs or data

it will perform another sequence that looks like brand new windows install ..... but its not ....... its just a brand new hardware detection and set-up

Thanks. I'll try the repair-install and report back... whatever the result.
