Help me diagnose this problem: Rebuilt computer, not booting (even bios)
Basically i took the guts of my old computer and put them inside an Antec take 4 rackmountable case that came with a 650w powersupply (24 pin connector).
If it helps you can see the case here: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16811129052 Everything stayed the same with the exception of the new powersupply that came with the antec case and i also installed a new heatsink. When i plug it in and hit power, a motherboard light comes on , the antec fans and the heatsink fans also turn on. I am not hearing the cpu or harddrives begin to spin and no signal is getting to my monitor. Now, my motherboard is an old gygabyte GA-k8u, the graphics card is a radeon 9100, and the cpu is a AMD 3400+. The motherboard itself only had a 20pin powersupply connector, while the new powersupply is a 24pin. It snapped in fine however, with the other 4 extra pins just not being connected. Since nothing is booting up and im not hearing the HD's start up or seeing the bios, im assuming i either A. damaged the cpu somehow or B. the powersupply truly only works with 24 pin capable motherboard? I am not sure hopefully you guys can help me figure it out. I can take pictures of my setup or give more info if it helps you guys

Re: Help me diagnose this problem: Rebuilt computer, not booting (even bios)
download a copy of the mobo manual from here http://www.gigabyte.com.tw/Support/M...ProductID=1914
use the related links section of that page to get the latest drivers for chipset, audio, etc... -verify the 4pin connector ATX_12V is installed (2 black, 2 yellow wire) it powers the cpu and system will not start if absent. -clear cmos by removing battery and shorting pins CLR_CMOS for 20 seconds, re-insert battery. -use only one ram stick till system tested and stable. if does not powerup then remove ram stick, verify external speaker connected to correct F_PANEL pins and powerup to see if get beep error. ------------------------------------------- Always give full details for parts (make-n-model) mobo, cpu, psu, video Both Athlon 64 Sempron 3400+ and Athlon 64 3400+ are supported for this mobo and use a System Bus speed of 1600(MHz).

Ok i will double check all the things you listed.
quick side question, it is possible that i inserted the CPU wrong (ie arrow facing the wrong way) and then fastened the heatsink to the motherboard, do you think this would damage it? i am going to take everything apart tomorrow and double check |

Re: Help me diagnose this problem: Rebuilt computer, not booting (even bios)
for cpu installation the triangle on cpu is matched to triangle on socket, check manual for detailed instructions and be sure to clean cpu and heatsink then apply fresh dab of thermal paste prior to install.
they're generally pretty tough so should be okay, but verify there are no bent pins on cpu.

Re: Help me diagnose this problem: Rebuilt computer, not booting (even bios)
one thing i think i have done wrong is the F PANEL settings. they are confusing to me.
My power supply has a total of 4 fpanel looking connectors, they are: Power Led (3 pin) HD led (2 pin) Power sw (2 pin) Reset sw (2 pin) However on my motherboard fpanel is labeled like this: Power led +MSG- +FW- +HD- -res+ NC So i am not entirely sure which cable matches up with which connection point. I sort of guessed on some of them before and that is likely why my computer is not posting at all and only the fans seem to spin can you guys help me figure out which goes with which? |

Re: Help me diagnose this problem: Rebuilt computer, not booting (even bios)
Nevermind the last post, i used the manual and figured out which goes where, checked and made sure i had them plugged in correctly, got all the power leds and cd-rom leds to turn on as well as cpu fans, however nothing shoes up on my LCD screen when i boot up (screen is connected to graphics card port) and like i said im not hearing any sound from the harddrives...all i really hear is the quiet cpu and case fans
edit: i also noticed the little fan on the radeon 9100 is not spinning when i power on Last edited by RonCarlston; 11-03-2008 at 03:06 PM. |

re-seat the video card if the fan does not spin see if you can borrow another card or try your card in another computer

Re: Help me diagnose this problem: Rebuilt computer, not booting (even bios)
I am kinda haveing the same problom. first things I would do is take out the video card, network cards, sound cards whatever is pluged into the pci slots. and turn the power on to see if the pc starts up you can tell by how the computer boots. if it does add hardware see if it does it again.
I had the same problom with my pc when I took out some hardware and would not boot back up till I put the wireless card back in and out again dont ask me why but sometimes computers can act up at times |

Re: Help me diagnose this problem: Rebuilt computer, not booting (even bios)
Well ive messed around with it extensively and cant figure out what the problem is,
can you guys recommend an affordable core system upgrade for this machine? the parts in it worked fine for my applications and they are all relatively cheap so i guess ill get something newer, id like to keep the cost under 300 just a motherboard/processor and graphics card good enough to support 2 lcd screens, will not be used for gaming |

Have you done a bench test to ensure that a standoff isn't misplaced or the board isn't grounding itself on the case?> How to Bench Test Your System

Quick question for you, if any of the CPU pins (say like 3 or 4) are slightly bent when you place it into the socket, does that keep the computer from posting or booting up whatsoever? while installing the heatsink i managed to bend a few, so i took it out and did my best to straighten them, however they wouldint go back to the perfect original position if you know what i mean
