PC will not post
Hi guys, new here, hope you can help me out.
Its like this. I was on my pc doing nothing in particular when everything went blank. Pc won't even reset or power down, i have to unplug it. Reboot and wont even post, evga 680i error code shows an 8 and what looks like a mirror flipped 9 which is not in the manual. After several tries still no post and the error code changed to 8E, which in the manual appears as reserved. The weird thing is the pc still will not reset or even power down when pressing the power button, even the little one in the mobo, i have to unplug it after every try. I tried resetting bios (with jumper and taking the battery for 1/2 an hour), trying one stick of Ram at a time, switched video cards, nothing. I have a Zalman 9500 which has a speed knob, disabled it and plugged the fan directly, as apparently 8E code deals with CPU fan speed, but still nothing. Fan works well btw. Sorry about the long post, im clueless here, any help? If power and reset buttons still wont shut it off i have to unplug it after every try. Forgot to add Im running a E6600 on Evga 680i. 8800GTS 512. PSU Ultra X Finity 2G 600watt. 4 1Gb RAM sticks Last edited by acon; 10-19-2008 at 02:08 PM. Reason: extra info |

Re: PC will not post
cmos reset
turn the computer off remove the power lead from the back take the side off remove the cmos battery move the cmos jumper from pins 1 and 2 to pin 2 and 3 and the back to pins 1 and 2 reinsert the battery put the side on replug in the power lead boot the computer there can be 2 solder points you touch with a screwdriver 2 pins you touch with a screwdriver or use a jumper a cmos clear switch or button there will be a diagram and instructions in your manual if that does not get you post leave the computer shut down for an hour and see if it boots if it does redo the paste on the cpu with some arctic silver if not see if you can borrow another quality 550w or better power supply to try in it

Re: PC will not post
was the psu you used better than what you have originally
remove the ram and see if you receive the bios error beep because it is missing

Re: PC will not post
About the RAM thing, no, i get no beeps. The PSU i tried is similar to the one i have, again everything seems to work, the video card's alarm doesn't go off (it does when the card doesn't receive enough power), all fans and leds work, which makes me think the motherboard is getting power. But i got no beeps when i took off all RAM. Weird.

Re: PC will not post
Well, no, not really, i couldn't get another one, but the ones i used i tried on another pc and they work. I doubt its about capacity, since its only powering mobo ram and videocard. BTW what does it mean that i get no beeps when trying without RAM?

Re: PC will not post
[since its only powering mobo ram and videocard.]
the video and the cpu pull 90% of the power so your logic is flawed no beeps indicate either the psu does not supply enough for basics or the m/board is shot

Re: PC will not post
Seems like the mainboard is fried or the BIOS corrupted.
Let's reset the whole mainboard first: unplug the power cord from the PC; holding down the power button for over 20 seconds and press a few time after that; this will discharge the whole system with any static left; remove any unnecessary devices like addon cards...etc and leave basic devices to boot; power on the PC again and see if works. If not, I wonder how long you have the mainboard, may be need to check the capacitors for any leakage. Reflashing the BIOS maybe a good try but remember to back up your current BIOS if you really need to do so. Hope this helps! Bill |

Re: PC will not post
dai: ah ok, fair enough, but the psu's do work perfectly on a friend'a pc. If i can get another one i'll try.
PcTestCard.com: Tried resetting the bios with the whole process, nothing, just the bare bones components, nothing. I cant flash the bios because i can't use any device like cd or usb memory, can't even get to that. The motherboard is a year and 1/2 old, maybe reaching 2 but not quite. I expected a longer life span, i checked but can't find any damaged caps. The error code leds now just randomly displays lines without shape of letters or numbers, i think the board is toast. Even in EVGA's site they recommended i replace it. Think i'll just bite the bullet. |
