Mistake XP page faults after mobo upgrade to P4c800e-deluxe

Hello,

First of all, I'd like to say that this forum is absolutely fantastic.

I have been fighting with my new mobo for a week now and am very close to throwing the computer out the window and buying a Mac!!!

I had a p4s533 which was trashed after doing a bios upgrade. Asus told me the board was corrupted so I went out and purchased a new p4c800e-Deluxe. I also purchased a new graphics card in the process.

My specs:

XP SP2
IDE drive
Samsung 512MB DDR 333 (PC2700)
Nvidia 5700 (used to have an Nvidia 4200 or something like that)

Symptoms:

When XP gets ready to load, I get the black screen with the Microsoft windows logo and it gets stuck there for about 2 minutes. Then, it reboots itself.

If I boot to the XP CD, I get to the screen with the three options (install XP, repair, or exit). I select the "install XP" option so I can get to do a fix of my install and I almost immediately get a blue screen with a page fault 0000050.

If I select the second option, to use the repair center, I am able to get to the command prompt and access my disk drive. But I don't know what the problem is and what I should be fixing.

I have spent several days playing with BIOS options and have disabled virtually everything in sight to eliminate any IRQ conflicts, etc. I've also put the board in compatibility mode and selected the 333 option for the memory. At this point, I am completely stuck and very close to giving up on it.

I would like to try either getting a new memory or maybe a SATA drive.

Any help would be GREATLY appreciated!

Thank you!
TP

Problem Solved!

I replaced the memory with a Kingston KVR400/512 and it worked.

So, even though Asus claims that it supports PC2700 chips, what they really mean is that they support only a small set of memory from a specific set of vendors.
