Frequent freezing. Power supply, software, video card problem? (Removed from Hardware
I was given a home-assembled computer from a friend.
Computer: AMD Athlon(tm) 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 3800+ 2.01 Ghz, 4.00 GB of RAM Initially when I got it, the computer would shut off after about 30 minutes or so of use. I attached a shitty home fan and that temporarily solved the problem. After a while, I began experiencing lockups every 30 or seconds or so. The mouse was movable, but nothing I did was recognized until the freeze was done. Sometimes the freezing will happen frequently, and other times not at all. I recently gave the computer to the business which works on my dad's law firm's computers. There had been a problem with the video card drivers before which they fixed. They also cleaned the computer of dust, and in the process caused one of the main fans to stop working. I don't know how that happened. I got the computer back and the lock up problem was still present. When I turn on the computer with the new video card drivers they installed, it says that the performance on the NVIDIA card has been reduced to compensate for insufficient power. I'll post the actual error message next time I see it. It happens on startup, and the computer's not freezing right now, so I'm not going to restart it now. Since the power message is new, I don't know if that's the source of the freezing, if it's software/hardware related or anything. In a thread of another forum where someone had a similar problem, they were asked for an HJT log, so here's that. Re: Frequent freezing. Power supply, software, video card problem?
and welcome to the ForumI suspect your real problem is the power supply, but you have no active antivirus and are very likely infected. . I'll ask that this be moved to the security forum. What is the Brand and wattage of your Power SUpply?

I used CCleaner, SUPERAntispyware, SpyBot S&D and MalwareBytes' AntiMalware in the recent past. Of course, by the end of that, there were no revealed infections and the problem persisted. I don't have an actively running antivirus, though, yes. Can you help me determine what the brand and wattage of my power supply are? I don't know where to find that information. Thanks, Ekowraith |
