Hi,
I am new to this forum. This is my first post. I need to confirm something, and I need your help. I am planning on getting a new Mobo and my choice is ASUS P5KPL-C. My current processor is Intel Pentium D 2.66 Ghz. I want to use this processor on my new mobo. From whatever little I know and understand about hardware, after reading ASUS P5KPL-C specs I feel there should not be any problems in using Pentium D with that mobo. However my hardware vendor is trying to tell me that Pentium D 2.66 will not be compatible with ASUS P5KPL-C and suggesting I get a Pentium Core 2 Duo. Is my hardware guy just taking me for a ride? Or am I missing something here? Please help me out. Thanks in advance. -- Souvik. |

Re: MotherBoard and Processor Compatibility
And he's right the PD 805 2.66Gig is not listed on the CPU Support list>
http://support.asus.com/cpusupport/c...&model=P5KPL-C Kind of strange considering P4 are listed but if it's not listed Asus has a reason. What are you looking to do with your PC as the G31 isn't a good gaming platform? |

Re: MotherBoard and Processor Compatibility
Hello,
Thanks so much for your prompt response. Well basically, I do a bit of everything with my PC - the usual home user stuff, also some PHP development work (so I need to run Databases and IIS etc.), some small scale photo editing of photographs from my digicam, and I also game - not a hardcore gamer but I regularly play the sports genre games like FIFA/PES, and also games like Hitman, Max Payne, AOM, Civilization etc. I am also planning on getting a 320GB SATA HDD and 8500GT Geforce graphics card. So could you kindly suggest some alternative Mobos, that will allow me to do all of the above stuff? I am on a tight budget, so nothing too pricey - around the same price bracket as ASUS P5KPL-C. Thanks again. -- Souvik. |

Not sure where your shopping >http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813128076
The PD805 has a 533 Front Side Bus which is why the newer boards don't support it. |

Re: MotherBoard and Processor Compatibility
It handles the data in a different way thus the lower clock speed handles more data while the Pentium D handles data similar to a Pentium chip. 2.0 is slow for a C2D that's not a mobile(laptop) which are a little different what number CPU are you looking at?

Can you give me an idea how the E2180 compares to my existing Pentium D 2.66 Ghz? I really appreciate all your help and support. Thanks. |

Re: MotherBoard and Processor Compatibility
It's faster but not earth shattering faster the dual cores use the newer tech but I wouldn't put that on a 945 chip set as it has the faster FSB and will take a faster board. Maybe ask the price difference between the E2180 and E7200.
