Does chipset matter?

Hi. I have Windows XP SP2, 6 years old that only has USB 1. I want to buy a new PCI USB2 Card.

The description of each card mentions a particular chipset (e.g. VIA, ALi). Will the chipset affect whether the card works? If so, how do I know if a particular chipset is compatible?
