[SOLVED] Bad Voltages perhaps causing PC to Hang?
Hello,
it's my first time here, and for good reason. You see my little nephew was playing around on my computer, he decided to plug in a faulty USB cord, and start attaching the exposed wires to parts of metal in the area, after i quickly removed him from the computer, i noticed funny things happening to the computer, such as frequent program hangs, particularly when trying to do something CD/DVD related (IE: Burning and ISO to disk) and i checked the error logs, and it had the following line, which i have never encountered before. The Title was ATAPI The device, \Device\Ide\IdePort1, did not respond within the timeout period. I was just wondering whether something is wrong with the motherboard, or it's just because my nephew did what he did, i've heard that messed up voltages stored within the motherboard can stuff up things, unless it's fully unplugged and all sources of power are removed for at least 30 seconds. Is anything wrong with the motherboard or any hardware, and is there a solution? Thank You, -Sam The Motherboard is a Foxconn, and the Processor is a Celeron D (2.6+ GHz) and the Hard Drives are a Seagate 75GB and a Western Digital 75GB both running on Parallel ATA (Pata/IDE) connection, and the DVD Drives are a Lite-On, and LG DVD. It's running Windows XP Professional SP2, and has 1GB of RAM. I can get exact hardware names, if needed, but that is the quick rundown. Last edited by sam.brereton; 08-25-2008 at 04:59 AM. |

Re: Bad Voltages perhaps causing PC to Hang?
He may have fried something with what he did, but let's try clearing the cmos and see if maybe that might help.

Re: Bad Voltages perhaps causing PC to Hang?
I unplugged everything, unseated the RAM, and reseated it, removed the CMOS battery, and left it for about a minute, plugged everything back in, disabled the Floppy Drive (For some reason it was enabled, even though i don't have one plugged in, because i don't use it that often.)
It seems to have worked, i am able to do things without them freezing, such as burn a DVD, without it failing. But i still wish to identify the cause. -Sam |

Re: Bad Voltages perhaps causing PC to Hang?
Some times the bios setting can become altered when there is an "electricity event" of any type either from a surge, an instant or sudden shut down, or even a small spark when plugging something in when you should not. I suspect that when you removed the motherboard battery, then it reset the bios to where it should be and therefore, the end of the problem. Enjoy your day and have a great week.
