Question Computer Dies on Starting

Hi can anyone please help me?

I have a Dell Dimension 3000 PC running xp every time i attempt to start it the power light turns to yellow and then the computer just hangs!

First of all checked, reseated and even replaced the memory card for a know good one and still no joy

I then went on to reseat every card and chip in the box but still no joy

Finally I went on to change the PSU (also for a known good one) but even that didn't help

Now I am at my whits end I am not too technically adept and would therefore really appreciate any assistance you can offer me.

Thanks

Re: Computer Dies on Starting

When you say everytime, does that mean everytime sense you got this computer or everytime sense when? Did you do any of importance to the computer before this started? Or did it just start doing this out of the blue?

Re: Computer Dies on Starting

Hi Pharaohz,

This computer used to work fine! I left it off for a few weeks and when I tried to start it again this is what happened. Now I can't get it to boot up at all. I have not done any software or hardware upgrades at all to it.

Re: Computer Dies on Starting

I am the technology coordinator for a small parochial school. We have purchased approximately 30 of these very same dimension 3000 computers. After a summer off, I came back to the same problem on several of the computers. I was able to get a few going and when they did the error message was that the computer had a thermal event. I have others, that simply wont start now. The yellow light being the only sign of life besides 4 blinks of the CD ROM drive. Absolutely no processor activity.

If there is anyone that can help, I would appreciate it very much.

Note: This happened after an approx. 3 month shut down for summer.

Re: Computer Dies on Starting

hummm tough call... I have no idea for sure what would cause this problem if you replaced the psu. Theres nothing in a computer that should make a few months off cause this problem. Other then dust... Ill do some looking and see what I can find.

Re: Computer Dies on Starting

If the computer just sits there with a black screen and yellow light on the power button, it's time to bench test this computer. Your motherboard is failing to POST. See the sticky on this forum about bench testing a computer. Try the other power supply during the bench test. If nothing works, there is a good chance your motherboard is dead.
