problem, pc won't start!
Hi,
I was serfing the web a couple of hours ago, when suddenly the pc just froze. the only thing i could do is to hard boot it. when booted the PC, before the OS started the there was a message that said something like : "The CPU has changed....." (the rest i can't remember); there were two of the standart options: F1 to continue or DEL to enter the bios settings. nothing worked, no matter what i pressed. when i pressed reset again, the screen was on standby mode (power save), and the HDD light near the reset button was ON all the time. I've tried to reset a few more times but it didn't help. Then i swapped the hard drive with another one i had, the HDD light was normal now but the PC screen was still on power save mode, so there's nothing much i can do, I can't even enter the bios settings. I even tried it on a different screen, still the same symptoms. it's like the fans are on but everything else is off! what can i do???? Last edited by fibo83; 08-13-2008 at 09:21 AM. |

changing the hard drives will not work. Though you should as least be able to get into bios. Id put the old one back in and do a cmos reset. There is a sticky at the top of the forums. Follow it and dont bypass any of the steps. Post what happens

Sure can be the psu. They dont often just fail 100%. If you can borrow one thats a great way to test.

Re: problem, pc won't start!
I recommend you bench test this computer. See the sticky on this forum. Try to keep disconnected the things that the computer doesn't need in order to get into BIOS setup. For example, the hard drive and disc drives.
All the computer should need in order to boot is video card, motherboard, processor, 1 memory module, and power supply. If possible, keep the case speaker plugged in (it makes the beep sound when you start the computer). Then you can disconnect memory and video card. In this setup, the motherboard should beep numerous times complaining about no memory. If it does not beep, the final test would be another power supply. If it beeps after a different power supply, then you know a failed power supply was the cause. If it still doesn't beep, then your motherboard is dead (most likely cause). Make sure the computer is turned off and power unplugged before making any changes to what is connected. Keep yourself grounded to avoid static discharge which can kill your components. |
