heating problems

i'm currently having heating issues with a intel 865perl MB, only on certain programs after long use the cpu and the southbridge are both over heating, i have put the cpu down to using a cheap thermal paste and going to do it again with artic silver 5, but i cant explain why the southbridge is over heating, never had an issue with it before its only just starting, there is no heating or cooling on the southbridge.

What's a good way to safely attach a heatsink for it

Re: heating problems

dirt and dust in heat sink can help cause this. New hardware, messy wires can all help increase heat. How many fans do you have pulling air into the case and then removing it? If you turn smart fan off in bios the fan will spin at max. This will be louder. A quick fix is to remove the side of the case for the time being also. What are you temps and fan rpms before you do any of this.

It might just be your cpu fan is starting to slowly die.

Re: heating problems

the cpu is a prescott 3Ghz on idle with windows running its at 47/48 celcius thats with the side case on or off, the heatsink is free of dust at the moment, under load of playing a game from the bigfish website the cpu is getting to 75 and the southbridge is getting around the same, it only happens on certain games though not all of them, nothing is being overclocked either just incase anything thinks it could be that..

if the over heating happened on every game or every application i would put it as something is dying also but its only on certain ones

is it fine to put superglue onto a heatsink and attach it to the southbridge?

Re: heating problems

no thats a very bad idea with the super clue. Super clue isnt a heat conductor. You didnt post the rpm on you the cpu fan. If its spinning under 3000 rpm, then id replace it. You can download a great program called Everest Home. This will give you a ton of info on your system. As for different games, some games demand more work from cpu. So its not uncommon at all for some games to heat up the cpu more then others. Also keep in mind, the Prescott runs hot but 75c is much to hot. I have the same cpu and I get great temps using the Asus Neptune fan and heat sink (26c idle, 35c under load. I have 2 fans pulling air in to the case and 2 pushing it out. I bought the Asus Neptune brand new one off ebay for 18.00 including shipping. Id also suggest you pick up a tube of Arctic silver 5 thermal paste and redue the paste on the cpu regardless if you get a new hs/f. As for the chipset, the only thing to help there is to get a chipset fan for it but do not glue anything down onto it. There are stickys at the top of this forum about thermal paste. Read it and remember, to much is just as bad as not enough. (2 small drops of paste spread out over the top of the cpu with the application card.
