cpu cooler problem
hi all, well yesterday i was playing day of defeat source (which was updated to the orange box engine) and i was playing for half an hour when i heard a loud noise from my case. ive heard it before but it usually only lasts 3-5 seconds, this time it went on for 15 seconds then without any warning my pc just shut itself off no error messages or anything. so i let it sit for 5 minutes then booted it up again noise started and it crashed again. repeated this a bunch of times and let it sit. this morning i took the case door off and ran it i think my cpu cooler is loose and its fan was going like a bat outa hell and with the door open i got it to my brothers desktop cause it was the first thing i clicked. right now im doing an avg virus scan. after its finished ill restart it and see if it crashes. is my cpu or its cooler causing the crash?
thanks in advance guys |

Re: cpu cooler problem
Hi,
Can you be a bit more specific in describing the noises you were getting from the pc. Was it the warning beeps you usually get from a motherboard when something is wrong? A sreaming noise? A grinding noise? If your CPU cooler is loose then obviously the processor will overheat and the system should shut-down. Continuing to use the pc when the processors heatsink is loose will cause damage to the processor, and more than likely to your motherboard also. Have you checked the heatsink & fan to see if they are secure? |

Re: cpu cooler problem
to houndog, it was a loud harsh whirring noise like a fan spinning too fast. and later i touched the heatsink and fan and it felt loose, i pushed it and it clicked into position, something must have knocked it free.
to bobalazs, ive heard this noise before but only during start up and for no longer than 4 seconds. it kind of startled me and once it went on for longer than usual i started to quit out of the game but it crashed before i could manually shut down. and ya i wouldn't have the money for an instant fix either. thanks guys for the quick responses my comp starts no noise or anything after i let it cool and pushed the heatsink/fan in. i guess it was an easy fix i just didn't know what to do at first. |

Re: cpu cooler problem
the starting it alot of times after wards.... not such a good idea. But hound has it right. Without being pressed tightly to the cpu. The heat sink does no good at all. Next time a problem starts, investigate it. Your very lucky your lack of doing so didnt cost you a new cpu. Peace

Re: cpu cooler problem
Hi, Corson
You should do as OMGmissinglink says. He knows his stuff! If ever the contact between heatsink and processor is disturbed, you must reapply the thermal paste after cleaning both cpu & heatsink. If not too confident, have someone you know carry this task out, as it must be done correctly and with quality thermal paste, like Arctic Silver. Here's the instructions.... http://www.arcticsilver.com/arctic_s...structions.htm It takes 10/15 minutes; will prevent your processor from overheating and therefore working at it's best. info on thermal compound Last edited by Houndog777; 08-01-2008 at 11:47 AM.
