Wont Boot Up

I have been given an 'Acer' desk top PC rather ancient (1997) but would like to get it working if poss.
It wont however boot up. When switched on a screen appears having the title 'Bios V2.0' with the following information - 032384 Memory Good.
64KB Management memory
good.
Equipment Configuration Error.

I have to admit to being relatively new to computers with limited knowledge in delving around inside. I can identify the relevant components and have had limited success in the recent past adding cards and ram to my own pc.

The situation seems to have changed now merely by switching off one day and starting the next.
Now when I switch on there is 1 'beep' from the board and the manufacturers logo appears followed by a screen with the pc info at the top in colour and below that the message - Invalid System Disc. Replace the disc and press any key. If I disconnect the Hard Drive a slightly different message appears requesting the insertion of a Boot Diskette in the A drive.
I don't have a Boot Up Disc for Windows 98 which is currently installed.

What is your boot order in the BIOS?
You only have one HDD? Does the HDD share an IDE chain w/ another device?

If the HDD is the only device on the primary chain, make sure the jumper is set to CS or pulled out...

Wont Boot Up

Thank you for the reply.
I have to admit I did not understand all that as tech qualifications are somewhat limited.
I do know that I cannot gain access to the BIOS and thereby make any alterations.

Wont Boot Up

Thanks.
I have managed now to access the BIOS and from the information found it would appear that the Hard Drive is not recognised.

Wont Boot Up

Thanks.
I have bought another PC from the Flea Market. If I change the IDE cable and there is no change can I swop the Hard Drive over? Will it be automatically recognised or will I have to make some changes in the BIOS?
I started out knowing nothing but this exercise is improving my knowledge and if I get this working for my sister that would be a bonus.

you can swap the drive over but you will have to format it 9 times out of 10

Would you be able to outline the 'Format' operation.
Will the replacement Hard Drive memory details be automatically entered in the BIOS?

when you pull the faulty drive out, look at the jumpers on the back and set the new one the same and the bios will pick it up.
you can down load a boot disk for 98 from here
www.bootdisk.com
you save it to your computer then send it to floppy
then boot the computer from the floppy
http://www.perfectdrivers.com/howto/fdisk-format.html
collect any drivers you require before you start
modem
video ect.
