K8V SE Deluxe hangs before boot with SATA drive
I'm helping a friend get his computer put together.
Equipment: Asus K8V SE Deluxe, flashed to BIOS 1004 Maxtor 6Y080M0 SATA drive ASUS V9520 series video (based on GeForce FX 5200) 1 GB (2 x 512) RAM, Kingston ValueMax, KVR400X64C3A/512 modules (on the Asus qualified vendors list) The drive is connected to the SATA1 connector, not one of the RAID connectors, on the board. The problem: system will come up and boot the XP install CD AS LONG AS THE SATA DRIVE IS NOT CONNECTED. If I connect the SATA drive, the system will POST normally (and show the drive as connected), but as soon as the POST and config displays disappear, a flashing cursor appears, and I get a series of rapid beeps that does not stop. I have to power the system off to make it stop. This doesn't appear to be a driver problem, as I'm not even to the point of needing a driver. I've tried backing the DDR speed down to 366, and boosting the RAM voltage to 2.8V, to no avail. Thoughts? |
