Faulty Asrock K7S41GX Mobo -- Problems with Onboard LAN (System Freezes)

Hello All,

I have an Asrock K7S41GXA Mobo equipped with an AMD Athlon XP 2200+ processor and 1024 MB of RAM. I recently formatted it and set it up with a dual boot of Windows XP and Ubuntu Desktop 8.04. Both OSs boot properly, all devices seem to work fine, until I plug in the LAN cable from my DSL modem into the onboard LAN interface in order to configure the internet connection! More specifically:

1) The system freezes completely and only the reset button on my case will get me out of the situation,

or,

2) The system will reboot by itself!

However, here's something interesting...I actually once managed to connect to the modem and had time setting up the connection (abt. 5 mins that is) but then the usual thing happened -computer crashed.

If the onboard LAN is completely faulty, why does it work some of the time for 5-10 minutes and other times the system either freezes or reboots immediately?

What is happening? I need your help!

Note: The modem is connected via USB to my Windows laptop (which I use to get on this forum); is it maybe that I am trying to connect both of the PCs at the same time to the same modem? (although I don't think myself this is the reason, just in case)

Thank you in advance for your help! :)

Hey there and welcome to TSF...
I could suggest you to disable onboard LAN ethernet card and buy new one [it is not expensive, maybe 10$ max for regular one] and install new LAN card... [or you can borrow from a friend for couple of minutes]...
test it to see what will happen...
If your system act normally then onboard LAN is faulty...
Hope this will help you mate...

Ah, I forgot to mention that the problem exists with both Windows and Linux, so I guess it is not a software problem!

I would also like to point out that when I leave the system with the BIOS Setup screen on, no matter if I plug or unplug the LAN, the system remains stable, not affected by that!

Re: Faulty Asrock K7S41GX Mobo -- Problems with Onboard LAN (System Freezes)

This sounds like a problem I saw with a gigabyte board that had a 965 chipset and an ICH8 southbridge which had a Marvel Yukon gigabit ethernet adapter. It worked for the time she used windows, but right after she installed linux on the machine, the network adapter never worked right again. It would crash and hang the system (hanging up linux and bluescreening windows), not get DHCP leases, all kinds of really messed up stuff. I accompanied my friend to Wal Mart and she bought a cheap LAN card on my advice.

That fixed it, but she still got rid of the board eventually because it would kill usb flash drives as well.

Re: Faulty Asrock K7S41GX Mobo -- Problems with Onboard LAN (System Freezes)

hi there,

bought the new LAN card, system DOESNT crash anymore, which makes me unbelievably happy :) :) :) however I hope that it doesn't destroy my usb devices, as I got the motherboard pretty recently :S

However there is one more thing and although it is of minor importance relative to the faulty LAN problem, it is still a nuisance:

...no matter which operating system I am working in, whenever I move the mouse, the brightness of the screen reduces lightly, bringing itself back to normal levels when the mouse isn't moving anymore...

I am assuming that this has something to do with the power supply; the lightness of the screen goes down while the light of the mouse (it is an optical one) is on...I tried replacing this PS/2 mouse with a USB one (optical too, this one); problem still not fixed!

Any suggestions? :)
