Another CPU Overheating: Intel Q9300

So I finally had my first built computer. When I turned it on, everything was fine until I checked the CPU temp. I've attached a reading of the temp in the picture below. These are my specs:

Intel Q9300 Quad Core 2.5ghz
MSI P45 Platinum Motherboard
Corsair XMS2 4Gb (2x 2Gb) SDRAM DDR2 800
BFG GeForce 9800 GTX Video Card
BFG 650W PSU
Antec Three Hundred Case

So I bought and installed a Zalman 9500 and bought three more 120mm case fans to help the cooling. After all that is installed, my CPU is still running at mid-50C on idle. I suspect some of the problems could be that I didn't install the Zalman in the right way. I had the fan facing down rather than front since my case has both a top and rear fan, so I figured it's better to blow air upward. Second, maybe I've applied too much thermal compound. I just used my fingers to spread it around on the CPU.

I plugged the Zalman fan to the motherboard system fan slot since it's a 3 pin (rather than the 4 pin CPU fan). Funny thing is that my MSI Core reader program is constantly beeping saying that I don't have a CPU fan. Would this be an issue? All my case fans are directly connected to the PSU, so there would be no fan speed reading on the programs. But I've set them all to high and there seems to be some positive air flow...

But anyways, hopefully there's something else I'm missing that you guys can help me with. Thanks.

plug your cpu fan on the cpu mobo connector.

Re: Another CPU Overheating: Intel Q9300

Thermal paste used is whatever that came with the Zalman.

I could plug the 3 pin connector into the 4 pin on the mobo?

Re: Another CPU Overheating: Intel Q9300

You should use Arctic Siver 5
http://www.arcticsilver.com/as5.htm

Or
ARCTIC COOLING MX-2 Thermal Compound
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16835186020

Yes your 3 pin fan will plug in a 4 pin mobo

Re: Another CPU Overheating: Intel Q9300

So I would see my CPU temp to drop to about mid 30C just with the Artic Silver? And also, my underlining problem is I'm not using the right thermal paste?

Re: Another CPU Overheating: Intel Q9300

I will point the fan to the rear when I get back home tonight.

I read the link, Dai, and it's saying to just apply the paste in a straight line in the middle and just put the heat sink on top of it? Then the paste will just spread by itself over time?

If beeping reason there is not a cpu fan plugged into the mobo cpu fan connector.

when you connect your fan in he cpu's mobo connector you plug in pins 1-2-3 ,disable in bios cpu smart fan.

Re: Another CPU Overheating: Intel Q9300

beeping is the wrong word. what's happening is the MSI program is not reading the cpu fan from the mobo, so it's sending a siren noise through the sound channel to the speaker. but once i close that program, the siren is gone.

so now would there still be a difference between plugging into the sys fan vs. cpu fan slot?

Re: Another CPU Overheating: Intel Q9300

ok, i reapplied the thermal paste and installed the heatsink with the fan pointing to the rear. however, when i tried to boot up, it'll turn on for less than one second and shuts off completely. what is wrong with my computer now? some kind of shorting again?

No it sounds like the cpu isnt seated back into place all the way. Have to pull off the heatsink again and make sure its all the way down and that the heatsink is set into place right.

Re: Another CPU Overheating: Intel Q9300

is the fan plugged into the cpu fan
is the zalman tightend down ok
if you can get into the bios and check the voltages and tempretures in there
the bfg psu's are definately not a recommended psu
when a power supply decides to quit most of the time you just lose it
when bfg go they have a habit of taking half the computer with it from what we have seen posted
did you have a shorting problem before

Re: Another CPU Overheating: Intel Q9300

I had the same problem when I reapplied thermal paste to a hot cpu. I couldnt get it to work at all. would just start up then shut down instantly no matter how many times I tried to reseat it. Finally had to RMA my mobo, not sure why that was the problem but it was..

i've done that but it's still doing the same thing (half a second power on, then turns off automatically)...

fan is plugged into the cpu fan slot
zalman refitted and tightened
can't get on to bios

i had a shorting problem before, but it was due to my rear I/O panel pushing against the "clear CMOS" button, so it never booted. but once i found out, everything is fine.

any other possible solutions?

i've already re-applied the thermal paste... that's can't be a startup problem right?

so once you replaced the mobo, everything worked again? it wasn't a psu problem?
