New build - power up issue

My laptop died about a month ago, and I finally broke down and decided to build a new PC. I got all my parts and assembled it and attempted a power up, obviously no luck. I have checked, double checked, and triple checked everything, and it all looks wired properly. I have gone step by step through How to bench test your system and still have no luck. My orriginal PSU was DOA (or so I thought) and had sent it back, however upon recieving the new one I have no better luck. What sort of steps should I take next?

My build

Sunbeam PSU-HUSH680-US-BL 680W ATX 12V 2.0 Power Supply
low quality waste of money
can you see a bios version on the chip you may need to update it to f1 or later

Re: New build - power up issue

What makes you think its not the power supply? Newegg sells it
for $42.00. The specs make no mention of amps on the 2 12v. rails.,
nor the effeciency of the product. Reading reviews of the product
at newegg, again not very impressed. That may or may not be the
problem, but for me its sure suspect. If you hook up a flakey/faulty
psu you can damage the mobo as soon as you hit the power button.
This is just my opinion.

While I understand the PSU may be an issue... how would I update BIOS with out being able to power up, or are you saying this should be done after a new PSU is procured and installed?

EDIT: Since I really want to get this working ASAP, would http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage....=1204331807576 be a decent alternative?

Re: New build - power up issue

if the board has the original bios on it and it needs updating for your cpu
then you have to boot up with an older cpu
update the bios
then change to your cpu
the m/b would have had to sitting on the shelf for a long time for it to have the original bios on it and not one of the later updates

Re: New build - power up issue

I do not see a version number on the BIOS chip. Also, I do not have a spare processor lying around, however I may be able to get my hands on one from a friend later tonight. Finally, any thoughts on the above posted PSU?

Re: New build - power up issue

Is there anything else I could try before returning/buying a new PSU? Also, is there any way of telling of my MoBo is dead without power? That is the only other option I can think of since I get no functionality period, not individual components. Finally, I do not see anything in my manual about a power indicator LED on the MoBo, but if anybody has experience with this board and could share, I would appreciate it.

Re: New build - power up issue

set it up out of the case on a piece of cardboard with
cpu
video
ram
speaker
and see if you get post
check you have the correct amount of standoffs no more no less
that they line up with the holes in the m/board
usually 9

if you don't get the single post beep
does the m/b light glow to indicate power
if you add a cd /dvd drive
does it open when you press the button
does the light flash on the front of the drive when you try to start
if you remove the ram and try to boot do you get the error beep code because it is missing

Re: New build - power up issue

I don't get a single beep, whirl, blink, blurp or any other onomatopoeia I could apply to a computer. Soooo my logical conclusion is yet ANOTHER dead PSU... screw sunbeam. I took out a voltmeter and got no juice flowing from it either, so I am assuming it is dead.

Re: New build - power up issue

Thanks dai, that is pretty much what I did allready. I'm going to give it one more wave of tests and if not I guess I'll need a new PSU (NOT A SUNBEAM POS).

Re: New build - power up issue

Well I am up and running now, however I have another issue... I shut down randomly. I start up and run for maybe two minutes max, and then I just power down.
