Upgrading CPU - Please Advise!

Hey, Im thinking of upgrading my CPU. I got new 2GB Ram and want to increase my processing speed so there are less delays with general use etc.

My Current CPU is:
AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 3600+ 2GHz, Socket AM2 (940) package, L1 Cache 2 x 64KB, L2 2 x 256 KB.

Motherboard is:
Gigabyte S-series M61P-S3, on the box it says AMD Athlon 64 x2/Athlon 64 socket AM2 platform, and Support AMD socket AM2.

Im currently looking at this new one: AMD Athlon 64 X 2 6000+ Processor 3.0GHz http://cgi.ebay.com/NEW-AMD-Athlon-64-X-2-6000-Processor-3-0GHz-FREE-SHIP_W0QQitemZ150269677823QQcmdZViewItem?hash=item150269677823

Is this compatible with my Mobo? Im not very experienced with replacing CPU's. Is it just as simple as replacing ram for example, take out the old and plug in the new? Anything else needs to be done?

Or, if anyone could find any better deals or recommend better ones, that would be great. Has to be able to ship to Australia though, I know there are better deals from newegg.com and amazon etc, but cant ship here :(

Im looking for a price range of about $100-$170, Thanks!

http://www.gigabyte.com.tw/Support/Motherboard/CPUSupport_Model.aspx?ProductID=2434

You can see there that your new processor will be compatible with your Motherboard...
So go ahead and enjoy...^-^

Re: Upgrading CPU - Please Advise!

Sweet, thanks man. Yeh id say its the 12th one down the list, right?
It says that the mobo is GA-M61P-S3(rev. 1.0). Does the Rev.1 mean anything? cus i looked up just the GA-M61P-S3 on other sites and it said the max System Bus was like 1600 or something. Can someone check up on that please :)

Re: Upgrading CPU - Please Advise!

Hey mate,
I just checked again and it seems that there is only one M61P-S3 Motherboard model on Gigabyte site and it is rev. 1.0 so I think this is motherboard that you have...
But to be sure, could you see on Motherboard next to model [M61P-S3] is there rev. 1.0. ???

Re: Upgrading CPU - Please Advise!

Hey mate,
I am afraid it is not listen on Gigabyte's site...
Are you sure it is with Motherboard, not with something else???
Anyways, I think any M61P-S3 version can support your new processor so do not worry ^-^

Re: Upgrading CPU - Please Advise!

Alright, sounds good, thanks. So does that mean that the 6000+ is the seond best CPU my board can take? 6400+ is the highest? So that one off ebay is a good option you think?

Re: Upgrading CPU - Please Advise!

Hey mate,
yes it is good processor... I would personally go for Intel, but since you have AMD socket Motherboard, then this processor is quite a good thing...

Re: Upgrading CPU - Please Advise!

Ok, thanks for your help, one last thing, on the gigabyte site it had new versions of the BIOS for my mobo. CPU-Z says i currently have Version F1 installed. There is F7e available. Should i install that? is it necessary?

Re: Upgrading CPU - Please Advise!

Well it is advisable to have latest updates for your Motherboard, including drivers and BIOS...
Because with every single new version, manufacturers are bringing new things that will improve performance for your component...
But better read summary for every version so you could decide what is best for you...
