three short beeps

I added a CD burner to a friend's old PC and then, post powerup, it gave three short beeps repetedly. [I had not altered anything else]. I removed the burner and it still did the three beeps thing. After pushing in every connection to make sure nothing had been bumped loose, it now seems to turn on but gives no beeps [not even one] and does not powerup the monitor or keyboard. Have I killed it? The motherboard is CA810

Re: three short beeps

Hey mate and welcome to TSF...
Make sure everything is hooked up properly...
Is it dusted inside the case??? Clean all dust with vacuum cleaner or with compressed air...
CD burner is on IDE cable right??? is CD burner only component on that IDE cable or there is HDD too???
Take out RAM memory and clean connectors with rubber, also clean DIMM slots with brush...
If you have more then one RAM module, put back one and start PC and do the same but with other one module...
It would be great if you can post system specifications...
Report back please...

Re: three short beeps

Thanks for the suggestions. Unfortunately the PC is not at my house but I can answer some of your questions... The HD and floppy drive are on one IDE cable and the PC has an existing CD reader in it on another IDE cable. I had put the CD read/write on this second cable and set it to slave. I did not change anything else and when I turned the PC back on and got the beeps, I removed the CD read/write assuming that was the problem but the beeps continued. But now there are no beeps at all when it powers up.
I have to admit that I am learning as I go... I guess the RAM memory is the board about 3cm x 12cm plugged vertically into the motherboard? and the DIMM slots are where it is plugged in? There is only one of these.
I will next see these friends on Saturday and get the specs and suggest a good clean and report back
Thanks
