problems with Q6600 quad and ASUS Mobo

Hi I put together a system with an ASUS p5n-d mobo, and a Q6600 2.4Ghz quad core. My problem is the cpu is only running at 1.6Ghz and the cpu will just shut down like after an hour, if I try to adjust the frequency in BIOS it will also just shut down. It says the CPU is running at 110C and the Moro/case is at 35C. Could my problem be the cpu is running too hot? Any advice would be appreciated.

Yes 110 is too hot check your heat sink and fan assembly make sure it is secure on the motherboard. What kind of thermal paste did you use?

Ya but if you want, fry some some hot dogs on it first :P

35-40c is common idle temps. 65c is high max load temps. So yes WAAAAAAAY to hot. Hope nothing got burnt up.

Yea I don't know why its running so hot got plenty of case fans plus the cpu fan. Maybe I have to get a better fan for the heatsink, what are some good ones?

Did you apply the Thermal paste correctly? Check out the link Wrench posted.

If you want a cooler look at the Zalman CNPS 9500 / 9700 .

Yes check paste. If there is a thermal pad on the heat sink, remove it and clean the top of the cpu and the bottom of the heat sink. Then apply a drop or two of arctic silver thermal past and spread it out even over the top of the cpu.

I like this hs/f but its for a 478 socket. Might find one to fit your socket.
