Im looking to get a new IDE Hard Drive to replace the 5 year old 80GIG that died. I can't seem to find any info on the maximum capacity size the motherboard will recognize. I want to go between a 160gig to a 320 gig. I also currently have a 120gig which my PC does recognize. Also, would I have to upgrade the BIOS as well?
SPECS: POWER SUPPLY: Coolmax, Model: AP-450X(V-400), sorry dont know "number of amps on +12V rail(s)." MOTHERBOARD: ASUS A7V8X-X, sorry dont know what "socket type" means CPU: AMD Athlon Barton XP 2500+ RAM: DDR 1gig VIDEO CARD: ATI Radeion 9550 AGP 8x/4x 256 MB HARD DRIVE: Western Digital Caviar Enhanced IDE HD, Model: WD800JB-00ETA0 OS: Win xp home SP2 Thank you Last edited by hobbes49 : 07-15-2008 at 11:23 AM. |

Re: Asus A7V8X-X maximum hard drive size capacity
there is no hardware limit for that particular board...any issues you have will most likely be software related (in terms of partitioning, formatting, recognizing the drive).. do a google search for "EnableBigLBA" for more details.

Re: Asus A7V8X-X maximum hard drive size capacity
Quote:
"Windows XP Service Pack 1 (SP1) and Windows 2000 SP3 add support for 48-bit Logical Block Addressing (LBA), which lets you access hard disks larger than 137GB. To enable 48-bit LBA with Windows 2000 SP3, you must also make sure the EnableBigLba value is defined and set properly in the Windows registry. In the original release of Windows XP, 48-bit LBA can be enabled for testing purposes by also adding the EnableBigLba registry value. With Windows XP Service Pack 1, the EnableBigLba registry value is no longer used or needed." So from the bold sentence I assume I dont need to make any changes sine I have WinXP Service Pack 2. I don't want to be doing any partitions. I just want to buy the HDD, hook it up and install winxp with Service Pack 1 on it. So does this mean I can just go ahead and buy and install this drive? thanks! Last edited by hobbes49 : 07-15-2008 at 01:49 PM. |

Re: Asus A7V8X-X maximum hard drive size capacity
yes you can buy the big drive ....... in the worse case senario if your motherboard does have a 127gig bios size limit ....... you can buy a cheap IDE controller card that will cure that .......
proceed with the fun !
