PC restarting problem
ok..i recently upgraded my cpu, ram and psu.
im now having the problem of the computer restarting randomly sometimes at the POST level sometimes when ive logged on..(although it doesnt happen all the time) BEFORE upgrade: ASROCK P4VM800, 2GHz P4, 512MB DDR pc2700, 60GB HDD, floppy drive,230W PSU AFTER: Asrock P4VM800 CPU:3.2GHz Prescott (3.2GHZ/1M/800) RAM:1GB DDR PC3200 DDR400 (Non-ECC, Unbuffered) 64X8 (Low) + 512MB DDR HDD: 60GB + 40GB HDD PSU: 450W [BIOS- RAM is both working at 333MHz when both are in together] ...i changed the psu because i thought the system was under-powered. turns out it never sorted the problem. CPU: cpu temp was reaching 50-64* (is that normal)?? RAM test: i had a spare 128MB DDR ram to help test. i havent properly tested the RAM - testing each stick in each of the 2x slots.. other than that is there anything else it could be?..

Re: PC restarting problem
you are suffering a notable hit in performance if you are mixing PC3200 with the PC2700
the mixing will make your system run at 333mhz FSB speeds the solo PC3200 will run at 400mhz FSB speeds the prescott cpu runs ALOT hotter and needs ALOT more power to run than you old cpu I would not run a prescott system with anything less than a high quality 550 watt power supply you are most likely still underpowered, especially if your power supply is a cheap one or a generic made unit if possible send that unit back and get the Coolermaster Real Power Pro 550 watt or Antec Earthwatts 500watt or OCZ 600 watt as for temps: the prescott should run 35C-40C at idle and 40C -60C at the heavies of working temps or gaming ......... I never accepted the prescott running above 55C in my systems though ...... I would look for more case fans or better cpu heatsink when I enountered those temps

Re: PC restarting problem
use memtest to check your ram for defect ........ always check with only one stick of ram at a time ..... test for two hours per stick

Re: PC restarting problem
so..the RAM is not to big an issue then??? at the moment it currently only has 1GB stick....if i get the psu sorted would it be ok to have the additional 512MB in?
as for cooling...i heard antec artic 5 with a Zalman CNPS7000B-Cu would be ok. 550-600W PSU?....any preference? if i need to buy these 3 how much would i be looking to spend?....kinda on a budget tho. could i get them for under £50?

Re: PC restarting problem
You need matching pair PC3200 ram.
Go into bios, advanced, set dram freq. PC3200 .. should be running 200mhz not 333mhz. Cpu temp's probably about normal if you just install the cpu.. post type thermal paste used. Last edited by OMGmissinglink : 07-13-2008 at 09:42 AM. |
