Cannot use Dual Core Cpu

Hi all, I' m new here and I' m facing a very weird problem. First of all, here is my system:

Sapphire PC-A9RD480Adv Motherboard
Amd Athlon 64 X2 4200+ (Not Overclocked)
ATi HIS HD3850 256mb GDDR3
2GB Corsair Value Select Ram(2x1Gb)
Maxtor SATA 250GB
EzCool 650W Sli ready PSU

This is a custom built system by myself. I pressed the power button and all went fine but after 10 seconds or so, the pc shut down by itself. I attempted to start it again but it shut down even earlier than before. One time, I managaed to get in the bios and saw that the cpu temperature was almost 100C! It turned off by itself, as usual and I tried touching the heatsink. To my surprise, it was still cold. This is a Xigmatek heatsink, the thermal paste is applied as a thin layer and the heatsink is firmly in place.

Later, I removed the cpu and tried a single core amd 3000+. And it all worked fine. Windows XP was installed along with all the drivers. Then I tried mounting the dual core back on, but the problem was still there
I would appreciate if anyone could help!

Thanks,
Reuben

Re: Cannot use Dual Core Cpu

redo the paste with some arctic silver
http://www.arcticsilver.com/arctic_s...structions.htm
it sounds like one of the securing pegs is poppng up causeing the increase in tempreture
each time you disturb the cpu you have to clean off and renew the paste
put a decent psu in it

Re: Cannot use Dual Core Cpu

Thanks for your reply, I will try to change the paste with arctic silver 5. I always clean the surfaces of the cpu and heatsink with surgical spirit before I apply paste. But in this case, I don't think it's the paste that's causing problems. I think you're right about the psu. It's not a quality psu and it has only 18 amps on the +12v rail.

Thanks, I will keep you posted with updates,
Reuben

Re: Cannot use Dual Core Cpu

Hi again, I bought the arctic silver 5 from ebay along with its cleaners. I expect it to arrive the next week. In the meantime, what psu would you recommend for my system?

Thanks,
Reuben

Re: Cannot use Dual Core Cpu

Hey,

Thanks for all the useful information you gave me! I guess the cpu was overheating since the psu wasn't giving out enough power. Yet, I can't buy another psu right now. My dad has this thaught that since my psu is a 650W and it is brand new, he thinks that it is very good. But from what I learned, rails are involved and other important aspects that make a quality psu.

The only problem is that I live in Malta and there's not a lot of choices of power supplies to buy. And I can't decide what I can buy(That's up to my dad!) The most powerful and cheapest psu I could find is this:

What do you think?

Hope to hear again from you,
Reuben
