So my computer started giving me problems; it would freeze and the image (whereever it froze) would get stuck on screen even after restarting pc -- i would have to hold the power button to fully turn it off, and then turn it back on.
I called OEM tech, and they more or less concluded it was GPU problem. the RMA cross shipment is on the way. however, as I was cleaning things off, I decided to remove cpu -- and when i did, i found this: ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() surprise! ![]() uhg... ![]() so, what is this? is my lga 775 fried? how about my q6600? this does not look good. should i show these pics to my oem builder? will they try and void my warranty or something -- like for taking the cpu out? ![]() any input would be appreaciated ![]() |

Re: Q6600/Striker Extreme surprise (fried?)
Hi, looks more like thermal paste to me. But I'm waiting on spectacles.
Have a look at your warranty and note it's conditions; are you going to install the new GPU yourself? If they are asking you to do that, then I don't see how they could complain at you reseating the processor and noticing something strange.

Toothbrush and a straw to suck out the dirt... slurp slurp... lol Or if by chance you have a ultra small vaccum that would work too.
EDIT: This is only a joke. Im sure there is a better way to clean it. Maybe at a locate repair shop?

Re: Q6600/Striker Extreme surprise (fried?)
Hi, Chris
You'd need some pure alcohol or electrical contact cleaner, a toothbrush and a can of compressed air. You must take special care with the anti-static rules. If not too confident, have someone who is experienced in cleaning electrical components do it for you. A System Builder, Electrician, TV & Audio repair technician etc.

Re: Q6600/Striker Extreme surprise (fried?)
Just got word that my OEM is going to cross ship me a new mobo and cpu! how awesome is that? What are the odds the new cpu will be a G0 stepping, as opposed to the B3 stepping that I currently have? I'm also curious if the stuff they're sending is refurbished, or new?

Re: Q6600/Striker Extreme surprise (fried?)
Just take care in cleaning your LGA 775 socket. Personal experience has shown me that the pins are easily bent... heh. And the parts you get from an RMA are usually refurbished, I think.
