"Scanning IDE Drives" then blank
Hey Everybody,
This is my first post here so I'm hoping I put this in the right forum. Anyway I'm having trouble with an old HP Vectra PC. I got it so I could try out Ubuntu. It's given me some problems but I've figured most of them out. There is one problem that's stumped me though. When I turn on the computer it comes up goes through a few boot up things and then comes to a screen that looks like this: FastTrak TX2 (tm) BIOS Version 2.00.0.24 (c) 1995-2001 Promise Technology, Inc. All rights reserved. Scanning IDE Drives............... Then the "Scanning IDE Drives...." is cleared and all that's left is the BIOS version and stuff. I've tried typing but it doesn't do anything. Can anyone help? !!I really want to try out Ubuntu!! |

Enter the bios setup menu and turn off the Promise Raid feature.

Re: "Scanning IDE Drives" then blank
Hold down the del key as soon as the thing starts, continue holding it down until it goes to the setup menu. If that doesn't work, then try it at different times as it starts to boot. Don't let up until it goes to setup. Some use another key instead of DEL (most use DEL), so tell us more about the rig and we might be able to assist more.

Re: "Scanning IDE Drives" then blank
Disconnect the IDE drives. Start it up. See what happens. If it boots completley, you may need to buy a STAT drive instead of IDE.
And anyway Ubuntu is crap, Windows is king.

Re: "Scanning IDE Drives" then blank
Unless you turn the raid search off, it will keep looking for a raid array.

Re: "Scanning IDE Drives" then blank
I can't turn the raid search off but I just disconnected the two arrayed hd's off and I'm running on another hd that's 13gig. Also I was wondering if I could disconnect the 13gig and plug in one of the other hd's in that slot (if that makes any sense). Could it harm the computer in any way if it's not the right kind of hd or would it just come up with an error?

Re: "Scanning IDE Drives" then blank
Have you tried the F1 key to enter the bios setup menu? Some computers use different keys to enter the bios. Somehow, I missed the HP thing earlier or would have mentioned that.

Re: "Scanning IDE Drives" then blank
Okay, I hooked up one of the arrayed hd's to the port where the 13gig was hooked up. So far everything has gone okay but I have one question. There are some power cords in the computer that all look the same except for there labels. One is labeled P1, another P2, and so on. Are they interchangeable? Thanks.
