Is this the first step??

I am about to build new system board.... And I happened to read sticky here How to Bench Test Your System

Would that be the first step to preform or mounting motherboard before determine if its work or not?? or say should I mount my board inside the case first and if problems appears, I get to follow on from sticky ??

Re: Is this the first step??

For me, I install the mobo in the case. Sometimes thats a mistake,
not often. When you do that you have to insure that all of your brass
standoffs are accounted for, usually 9. I think. The brass standoffs/
spacers are to keep the mobo from coming in contact with the case.
If you put a standoff in the wrong place, it could very well short out
the board, so you really have to pay attention to this.
You cant just screw in a standoff in every hole and expect everything
to go well unless you are lucky. The case is usually made for various
mobo scenerios, ie mini atx, full atx. If you do it wrong and the board
shorts, it could fry the board and does. Other than that your good
to go, just pay attention to connections....setting up board outside
of case for me is a last ditch effort to see if theres any life to the
board......

Re: Is this the first step??

Do the Bench Testing first to make sure all the basic components work.

Then build it inside the case. If you recieve any errors then you know that all the components are working so it must be a simple error.

(Remember to use the stand-offs inside the case ).

Good luck

Re: Is this the first step??

Thanks for the suggestions, pointers...

Manic.. I think I d go with bench test first.. I was convinced by replier from another forum.
"How big is your Tower/Case? do you think you will feel comfortable to diagnosis problem inside the Tower/Case if there isn't room for you? Are you be willing to take time consuming work placing board in, out of stand offs?" Well... I have big hands, and my hand is unstable so I don't want risk damaging mobo inside the case. So I am gonna try bench test as suggested.

Hawman... Thank you for the pointers and care to tell me why emphasize to use stand offs? (I know its best to use stand-off but want to know for some knowledge benefits)

Re: Is this the first step??

If you dont use Stand-offs the back of the motherboard will touch the case, so when you power it on the motherboard will basically short out causing it to blow. The Stand-offs basically lift the motherboard up a little so none of the components are touching the case.

Re: Is this the first step??

When i built mine for the first time, i assembled it on a card board box before putting it in the case

Re: Is this the first step??

I build all pc's outside the case first, start them up and check temps and voltages in bios for a good 15 minutes then run memtest for 3 passes. If everthing looks good I then install it in the case.

I like this approach for several reasons, I like to know the core componentes are good before I proceed and having the heatsink and ram installed while laying flat on a piece of cardboard becasue of the necassary pressure required to mount some types
