Fujitsu Scaleo won't boot up

Hi there,

I have a Fujitsu Siemens Scaleo 600 PC running Windows XP Home Edition.
Over the weekend I switched on the PC and get a black screen telling me that it cannot find a device to Boot from and to insert boot disk and hit any key.

Pressed Del when I restarted the PC and checked that the PC is trying to boot from the Hard Drive. It is.

The PC is a couple of years old but I had a similar problem about 2 months after I bought it. An engineer came out and managed to fix it (he claimed I wasn't waiting long enough for it to find the hard drive and that it fixed itself!). At the time he said that it was due to over-heating on the controller(?) for the hard drive and not to leave the PC for long periods of time. He also told me if it happened again I'd have to dump the existing hard drive and replace it with a brand new one.

Any help or thoughts on my problem greatfully received!

Thanks,
Paul

the error message you receive on boot up is the bios telling you the hard drive wont communicate

Re: Fujitsu Scaleo won't boot up

As per thread http://www.techsupportforum.com/hardware-support/hard-drive-support/186428-hard-drive-failure-fujitsu-siemens-scaleo-p.html I am going to open up the box and check the connections to the hard drive.

I'm guessing that I'm going to need a new hard drive. Can anyone tell me if this is normal behaviour for a PC? I kind of expected it to last more than the 2 years I have it.

Re: Fujitsu Scaleo won't boot up

yes hard drive last alot longer than 2 years normally !

in fact; chances are very good that drive is still under warranty

fujtsi are very good drives / but all drive manuf's have their share of clunkers

Western digital is getting to be a little to clunky for me though IMHO

thats why I switched to seagate & I still use plenty of Fujtsi drives

Re: Fujitsu Scaleo won't boot up

I switched on my PC last night (it had been switched off for a couple of days), pressed 'Del' and checked the BIOS again for the boot options.
I noticed that there where now 3 options where there had only been 2 over the weekend! Changed the 3rd option from disabled to the other available boot device and the PC booted perfectly. Hard disk is intact and working normally, all data available.

It appears that the 2 boot options I had while I was experiencing my problem were:
1. DVD drive and
2. "Generic storage device".
The 3rd option I now have is apparently the hard drive.

This is similar if not the same as the problem I experienced 2 years ago when the engineer 'fixed' it.

Obviously I'm happy that my PC is now working again but I'd love to hear any ideas you guys might have as to why this is happening.

Thanks for your help on this so far.
Paul

Re: Fujitsu Scaleo won't boot up

you have just discovered first hand why I ONLY sell asus & gigabyte motherboards when my warranty applies

if a customer wants something else >>>>>> its his warranty ! .......... I continue to help them for free; but Dr. Quinn medicine man doesnt make housecalls for such systems

they bring the system to my shop and I help fix when time permits ........ the emergency status goes out the window

I sold two EVGA 680 motherboards that almost drove me insane !
