CPU upgrade for my DELLXPSR400 (made in 1999)
Hi I wanted to upgrade my DELLXPSR400 so I could run Windows XP reasonably enough with basic MS Office and media players. The system was originally made in 1999 with a Intel 440BX Chipset. It supports Pentium but upto a certain type. I want to upgrade to CPU, but I can find anywhere to buy it. I specifically want a:
Intel Pentium III 1 GHz, 256KB Cache, 100MHz FSB SECC2 - SLOT 1 Ive looked on ebay with no luck. Please HELP. I did however find it on a site called PCUpgrade: http://www.pcupgrade.co.uk/productde...categoryid=100 But biggest joke was it was being sold at £125 excl. VAT. I have a new computer with a P4 that you could find for less opn many site. PLEASE help me find this processor for a reasonable price |

My advice to you is not to waste your money. I would be looking for a cheap new computer (there are some out there), or building a basic unit yourself.

Re: CPU upgrade for my DELLXPSR400 (made in 1999)
I wasnt intending to buy a new computer. I already have a releatively new one working fine, performance wise. I just wanted my old computer to work effectively on a Basic XP and Office enviroment. A small and should be cheap CPU upgrade would cost alot less than buying a new one.
If I had bought a cheap new one, I would end up with a celeron processors, which literally is junk leftovers from Intel. I wouldnt mind buying a processor with 900Mhz but I cant find these. |

They probably have it at a dear price because those CPUs are hard to come by nowadays, and I doubt you'll find it anywhere else.

Re: CPU upgrade for my DELLXPSR400 (made in 1999)
If I was to get a CPU upgrade, what is the big difference between 512KB Cache and 256KB Cache, and why are most Pentium 3 (with 100Mhz FSB) only have a 256KB cache, where as my Pentium 2 has 512KB.
Is there such a big difference between the performance with these two cache values |

You will defintly notice a difference with the bigger cache. but a faster clock speed should make a bigger difference. What is on your mobo? SLOT 1?

Re: CPU upgrade for my DELLXPSR400 (made in 1999)
Yes I would say so. Especially if your going from 1 CPU type to another (P2 -> P3) But I agree with tumbleweed. By the time you spend the over priced amount for a new CPU, you might as well by a faster more efficient Dell computer.
