BIOS Problem
Hi Folks,
I hope you can help. After downloading Windows SP3 my PC went into continuos reboot. I Googled for a fix, but apparently there is none. Yet. I purchased a WD 500GB Caviar SATA hard drive and reinstalled Windows XP Home. All works fine to this point. However, after reconnecting my two IED drives, my BIOS doesn't recognize my WD SATA, and of course Windows does not boot. If I disconnect the two IDE drives then I have no problem. The BIOS sees the WD SATA and Windows XP Home boots fine. However, I would like to connect my two IDE drives in order to use them and access my data. The tech at BestBuy said I needed to upgrade my BIOS with Flash. I have made a Flash floppy with what I hope is the correct update, which I purchased on-line. After talking to that company tech he assured me this was the correct Flash I needed. However I have not yet done the Flash, as I am fairly new at working the innards of my PC. I have P4 Titan Intel 865G Chipset GA-81G1000MK AGP 8X / Dual Channel DDR I do hope you can help, offer suggestions, or point me in the right direction. Elef |

Re: BIOS Problem
Thank you for your reply.
I didn't consciously do something that I would say constituted installing Sata drivers- perhaps you can clue me in about that. My Sata is Western Digital 500GB Caviar SE16, and I followed the CD Iinstructions -their "Data Lifeguard Tools". My PC is something someone put together for me. I have no PC brand name. I purchased it in 2003. The only motherboard info I have is: Giga-Byte GA-81G1000MK Intel 865G Chipset Intel Pentium4 Processor 2.6GHz I hope this is the info you need. Thankyou. Elef. |

Re: BIOS Problem
With XP you have to press F6 at the prompt and install the Sata drivers for your motherboard usually from a floppy disk or they can be slip streamed on to Win Xp
disk with a CD burner. Did you have a Sata drive before or just IDE drives? I'll Look for the drivers you need. |

Re: BIOS Problem
This is a link to your manual on page 42 it shows the sata configuration enter the bios and see what yours shows let me know if it is mapped to an IDE port also how many IDE devices do you have (Hard drives,CD,DVD) I used the European link because it's faster.

Re: BIOS Problem
Thanks for the link. I have two IDE hard drives and one IDE DVD drive. Also one Sata hard drive with my clean Windows XP Home install.
I don't know how my Sata is mapped. I'm not sure what that means, but with only the Sata connected, these are the BIOS settings: On Chip Primary PCI IDE ... Enabled " " Secondary............Enabled On Chip Sata....................Auto Sata Port '0' configure as IDE Primary master (DIMMED) Sata Port 1 configure as Primary Slave (DIMMED) With these settings and connecting only the Sata drive I have no problem. As soon as I connect the two IDE drives, PC goes into continuous reboot as the corrupted WinXP (SP3 problem) is on the IDE recognized as the Primary Master. The sata does not appear listed anywhere in the BIOS, although it is still connected. The Sata is no longer the Primary Drive. I have no idea how to make it Primary. I feel I am getting the settings wrong and have no idea how to configure them. Thanks for you help. I appreciate it. |

Re: BIOS Problem
Thanks for all the info. I have read carefully and followed the suggestions regarding my manual.
(When I installed Windows XP Home on my Sata, I was not prompted to F6 nor do I have a Floppy with drivers. Could they have been on my install Windows CD?) Now wiith my two IDE and my Sata (with windows xp Home) physically connected I can boot windows no problem. However, BIOS still doesn't detect the two IDE. Depending how I configure BIOS I either see the two IDE (and not the Sata) and PC doesn't boot, or I see just the Sata (and not the two IDE) and I can boot okay. I have played with the BIOS settings in an exhausting number of ways and can not configure a setting that shows all three drives in the BIOS. Nowehere in BIOS doI see anything that can be set to "enhanced". In device manager my controllers are: IDE, ATA/ATAPI There are no Sata or AHCI controllers. Could this be an issue? And would Flashing a BIOS upgrade change this? Does the following info provide any clues? BIOS Type: Award BIOS Date: July 14th 2003 BIOS ID: 07/14/2003-i865G-6A79AG0CC-00-None BIOS OEM: Intel 865G AGPSet BIOS for 8IG1000MK FC - FC Chipset: Intel 2570 rev 2 SuperIO: ITE 8712F rev 5 at port 002E Manufacturer: Gigabyte Technology Co., Ltd. Motherboard: 8IG1000MK OS: Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition Service Pack 2.0 Maximum Memory: 4096MB Installed Memory: 1024MB Memory Config: Slot1:0 Slot2:512 Slot3:0 Slot4:512 I appreciate your help, but I am still a bit DENSE about this, admittedly a little less dense than last week. Thank you |

Re: BIOS Problem
I'm thinking that because you set up XP without the Sata drivers it will not run in Sata mode, how many IDE devices do you currently have? With Sata set to auto it will be seen as the IDE 1 Primary drive. from the manual> Auto When there is no device to be plugged in IDE1 or IDE2, SATA controller will
remap to IDE controller. (Default Value) SATA Port0 Configure as This item will available when "On-chip SATA" set at "Manual". IDE Pri. Master Remap SATA Port 0 to IDE Pri. Master. IDE Pri. Slave Remap SATA Port 0 to IDE Pri. Slave. IDE Sec. Master Remap SATA Port 0 to IDE Sec. Master. IDE Sec. Slave Remap SATA Port 0 to IDE Sec. Slave. SATA Port0 SATA controller set to SATA port0. As this mode, it support by WinXP orlater OS only. (Default value) SATA Port1 SATA controller set to SATA port1. As this mode, it support by WinXP or later OS only. So to boot from the Sata drive you need to set Sata Port0 IDE Pri. Master Remap SATA Port 0 to IDE Pri. Master. And remove one of the IDE drives from the IDE controller and set the other as slave. If you want to use all three drives then you will need to install the Sata driver from the motherboard manufacturer when installing XP because MS never included them on the XP disks.
