New processor only running at 1.10GHz

Ok, so recently I had problems with my computer, ended up getting a new processor, an AMD athlon xp 3200 (same as my old one).

I just clicked my computer and checked to see how 'fast' it was supposedly running and its only registering 1.10GHz. Now, even though its technically clocked at 3.2 it unsually only gets around 2.2GHz (or so I've been reading).

Is there any way to "test" it to see what speed its currently getting?

I bought the processor on Ebay but the seller guaranteed it to work.

Thanks.

CPU-Z or Crystal CPUID will tell you.

Re: New processor only running at 1.10GHz

Thanks, I tried that, it said the same. I did a bit of googling and came up with this. (from another website)

Quote:
Just wanted to put my pic up and see if anyone sees anything funny, or if this is the real thing. CPUID is only showing 1.1GHz clock speed

OK, one more for the nervous-like...
Response: My guess is that your CPU is running at FSB 200 MHz. Change FSB in BIOS to 400 MHz.

So it seems others have had this problem. I just went to BIOS but didn't see how to change the FSB to 400MHz, any help on that one? Or should a mod redirect this to the BIOS section?

Thanks.

Re: New processor only running at 1.10GHz

It depends on how your bios is configured. If you have an OEM machine (dell, hp etc.) you likely won't have much for settings that can be configured manually. They strip out all the good stuff so that people don't fry their machines and call customer support. Check your motherboard manual for the bios settings, they are usually pretty comprehensive. Let us know what board it is, someone with the same would have an idea on what you have to change. Bios type and version would be nice too.
Another thought is your cpu could go down in speed when not required, like with Intel's SpeedStep. I don't know what the AMD equivalent to that is, but have heard one mentioned.

Re: New processor only running at 1.10GHz

It's most likely an AXDA3200DKV4E. The CPU's "real" speed is 2200 MHz - bus speed 200 MHz, multiplier 11.

The AXDA3200DKV4D runs at 166 MHz x 14.

Computer is self built. Motherboard is a ASRock K7S8XE. Bios is American Megatrends Inc. Version P2.20

I had the exact same processor in another computer (but with an Asus Motherboard) and I'm pretty sure it was getting the 2.2GHz speed that its supposed too.

Here is the CPU-Z screenie. (click thumbnail for larger)

Thanks.

Re: New processor only running at 1.10GHz

Yep that should run at 2.2, have a look at your motherboard manual and see if it mentions a jumper to set the cpu frequency if it has this jumper make sure its set to 200 mhz, most boards are shiped with the jumper set to default of 100.

Then enter bios and load the optimized defaults and you should be good to go.

If not report back what you find and me or eneles will download your manual to have a look

That was the problem, I swapped the jumper, then entered BIOS, it said my processor speed is 2200MHz, so I attempted to exit and load windows and now the computer doesn't load windows.

It restarts, the windows XP loading bar comes up, then it automatically restarts again. Now this is what comes up

"We apologize for the inconvenience, but windows did not start successfully. a recent hardware or sofware change might have caused this.

if your computer stopped responding, restarted unexpectedly, or was automatically shut down to protect your fils and folders, choose last known good configuration to revert to the most recent settings that worked

if a previous startup attempt was interrupted due to a power failure r because the power or reset button was pressed, or if you aren't sure what caused the problem, choose start windows normally."

then the options

safe mode
safe mode with networking
safe mode with command prompt

last known good configuration (your most recent settings that worked

start windows normally.

Under Boot my settings are

Quick Boot Mode Enabled
Boot Up Num-Lock On
Boot to OS/2 No
Boot From Network Disabled

My boot device priority is set to
1st IDE-0:WDC WD2500AAJB-00WGA0 (which is my harddrive)
2nd CD/DVD=0 :SONY DVD RW DW-U14A (Which is my cd/dvd drive of course).

3rd and 4th are set to disabled

And under 'Try other boot devices' its set to YES.

Also

CPU HOST Frequency By Jumper
Actual Frequency 200MHz
DRAM Frequency auto
Speed Spectrum Disabled

Any ideas? Thanks.

Tried it, won't work. The computer boots fine when I change the jumpers back to load at the 100MHz.

Is it possible I'm going to need to do a repair install on Windows? Perhaps it thinks I'm trying to install a new processor? (unaware if that makes a difference, just thinking)

I must be missing something, this asrock board is it new also?
The hdd you are using, was windows installed on it with the asrock board?

Yes, the MoBo and HD are brand new, I just put everything together and installed windows on it yesterday. The processor was used (bought on ebay) but with a guarantee it'd work.

Re: New processor only running at 1.10GHz

Ok I just got your manual, many thanks to grimmx for the link!

What ram do you have and how many sticks? It seems the sis chipset has a limitation on the fsb if your running ddr 400/pc3200

Re: New processor only running at 1.10GHz

One stick of 512MB of PC3200 DDR 400

I was intending on upgrading my RAM soon anyways (actually was going to order as soon as the computer was running).

What do you recommend I buy? Was planning on adding at least another 1 gig stick (to complement my already 512mb so I'd have a gig and a half).

Re: New processor only running at 1.10GHz

Hold on on that upgrade we have to get the computer stable first, then we'll get back to that after I check what it can handle.

Enter bios, under the advanced tab, set the "DRAM Frequency" to "100MHz <DDR 200>",

Make sure you save when you exit

Restart and choose "last known good configuration" and see if it will boot into windows

Ok, did that and it booted into windows fine. Note, this is with the jumpers set for the computer at 1.10GHz. It still won't boot up with the jumpers set to 2.2GHz.

Thanks.
