dell e510

would like to upgrade my cpu in my e510 machine.
i have a 600 w power supply, 4g ram, 8800gts, vista, dual monitors, blah blah blah...

i have a Intel® Pentium® 4 Processor 630 w/HT Technology (3.0GHz,800FSB)

i know when i bought this machine there were "better" processors available, but i opted for this one. when i search dells website there are no replacement parts for this machine any more.

does any one know what the other processors were, and where to find and buy one?

i also have a dell inspirion 1720, with Intel® Core™ 2 Duo T7300 (2.0GHz/800Mhz FSB/4MB cache)
and i can tell my laptop is faster than my home computer.

i would like to speed up my home computer, without going through the whole mother board change.

but if it would be easier, and maybe cheaper than i would consider changin the mother board.

any info greatly appreciated

Re: dell e510

IMHO you will be shooting yourself in the foot if you dont change motherboards

if you change motherboards the cpu you can buy can be a fast one like the intel Core 2 duo's like the E7200 / E8200 / E8400

while if you try to keep your old dell board the best you can do is a faster P4 like the 3.6ghz ........ or if you are really gutsy and daring you could play the game of hit and miss and try some dual core "D" processors

all those choices are marginal and very iffy

in your shoes I would go to mwave.com / click on refurbished / click on motherboards

they have right now an ASUS P5K motherboard for $67.00

then thow in one of those cpu's I listed for you and any of those choices will run circles around any cpu upgrade you could possibly hope for with the dell board !

and the asus board is a guaranteed shot at performance / playing around with upgrading a dell board can be like quick sand when the replacement cpu you buy wont fire because Dell has no bios offering to allow it to function

Re: dell e510

of course you will need to buy a computer case too >>>>> those are cheap >>>>> look at some of the raidmax or coolermaster cases >>>>> you can find Med ATX cases for under $40.00

Re: dell e510

this may seem like a dumb question, but why would i need to get a new case?

will the new board not fit my dell case?

out of the processors you mentioned above, which would be best for call of duty 4, crysis, or any of the other games out there.

i also do alot of photoshop work, and have many different aplications open, and slwoing my machine down, plus media player playin music, and whatever else might be goin on in the back ground..

thanks for your help, im not too up to speed on computer stuff, plus just gettin home from iraq, i cant believe my home computer is soo much slower then my laptop.
