[SOLVED] CPU Temperature Jump
I built a computer that runs WINXP 64 pro for my woodworking shop about a year ago. Has been running fine until the other day it rebooted twice. I live in Texas and summer tempertures of 98-99 F are already here. The machine is in an office next to the shop and saw dust blows in and I have not been running the AC yet. The room temp gets up to about 85- 86 degrees lately. I have been reading other posts on this site with "Hot CPU issues" and so far I have done the following (1) Completely cleaned out the PC cabinet of dust (2) Changed the system fan to a Tricool that plugs into the motherboard (MSI P965 Neo with Core 2 6400 running at 2.1 Gh) (3) added a tricool 80 mm fan to the front to increase air flow. (3) Downloaded and installed Fanspeed to monitor temp and speed.
After making these changes the CPU temp without significant load is running 47-50C. One concern I have is that when I run AVG virus scans the temperature increases up to about 77C. Before I made the changes it would rise to 80C with the AVG scan running. The CPU Usage gets up to 100% in FANspeed when the temperature spikes. When I first built the computer, I followed Intels directions for installing the heat sink and fan to the CPU. It did not say to use thermal compound. I was concerned about this but followed the directions. Is there anything else I should do. I see from the site that the top temperature for this CPU should be about 60.1 C. Another problem is that the fan speed for the front fan conected to NB-Fan1 shows 0 speed in Fanspeed. When I run Fan speed and the utility that came with the MOBO "CoreCenter" several time all fan speed indications drop to zero and the alarm sounds. Looking in the case all fans are in fact running. One more tidbit. The CPU package was labeled Core 2 6400 but FanSpeed and other software call the machine a 6600. I may have set this machine to run faster than it should. Any sugestions? |

Re: CPU Temperature Jump
Hi Joeth88,
I see you got a CPU temperature issue and a FAN issue. By solving the FAN issue its better if you solve CPU temperature first perhaps it has something to do with each other.... Since u temperature of the CPU is far to high that isnt getting solved my fan or watercooling you have to check your system again.... I strong believe you, and like you told you build it yourself, is that the CPU Cooling isnt pressed good into your motherboard. How to solve.... Open system, unplug all cable from motherboard, get your motherboard out of system.... get your CPU fan off your motherboard, check your cpu again if its good installed.. now you have to get your CPU cooler on the motherboard, but my strong advise it to do it before you place your motherboard again in the system, so you can hold the motheboard behind when u gonna fit it, you really have to hear "click" and check if the foots from the cooler are standing correctly if you done that... install it again in your system and see if that works... if not... you have to go back your the shop where you bought it since then its probably out of order. My english aint that good, so I hope this will help a little bit. I had it aswell before, i almost look like the cooler installed good but something your wrong. And does the cooler not "touch" your CPU, it is running but it has nothing to do how you did install it but more if you connected the cooler on your motherboard. Let me know if it solve your problem and if you still got the FAN issue. Good Luck. |

Re: CPU Temperature Jump
Start by cleaning your CPU/Heatsink off and replacing the thermal paste with Artic Silver. Follow directions carefully:
Applying Artic Silver Thermal Paste

Re: CPU Temperature Jump
Thanks guys
Looking closer at my CPU fan I noticed that one of the four attachments was loose. I remember that when I initially built the computer that I had problems with getting the heat sink/fan to attach to the motherboard. Removing the Intel box fan assembly I notice that one of the plastic supports is broken off that locks the leg down. I purchased a Thermaltake (TR2-M21-RX) cooling fan at frys with silver thermal 5 compound and installed the new fan. The no load temperature dropped to about 35->40C and the CPU temp under load is now about 50C with Virus scans running in an office with room temp of 88F. The front 80mm system fan that I installed is running fine but still showing a zero speed in fanspeed. I will try to figure this issue out next. Thanks again, your site is very helpful for the home computer builder. Joe Thornton joeth88 |

Re: CPU Temperature Jump
Hey, glad you have it up and running at those temps. They are great. If you run the fan directly from the power supply instead of through a monitoring system like the motherboard, it won't show in speedfan. I would not worry about it showing that even if it is hooked up to a monitor as long as it is running.
Let us know if you have further difficulties and don't be a stranger on the forum. Stick around and enjoy the fun.
