there is a fan on my ASUS MB that is making a whirring noise

I run my computer quite a bit, and recently it's been making a whirring noise whenever I turn it on, like a low pitched "zzzz" noise. Does anyone know a cause for this fan to start making it? My friend said my motherboard was going out.

Could be dust clogging up, clean it up with a can of compressed air. You could also try oiling the fan: http://www.dansdata.com/fanmaint.htm

If no luck then you could replace the fan if you can't survive with the noise.

I had one go loud on one of my two Abit boards, I removed it from the board, took it apart and applied a small amount of dry graphite to the fan spindle. That lasted about a year, but it did eventually have to be replaced. I called Abit's customer service and they sent two new fans out at no charge, you might try that with Asus. Mike
