[SOLVED] Computer dies immediately on startup
I don't know if this is the right section because I don't know what is causing the problem, but I swapped power supplies and briefly shorted he momentary switch (startup switch) and I still get the same problem. The computer makes a beeb like it's about to start and things start whirring like they should, and then everything dies. If I hold down the momentary switch a little longer, the good stuff goes on an instant or two longer, but then nothing. Any thoughts on this would be helpful.

Re: Computer dies immediately on startup
Hi philman and welcome to TSF,
Complete specs of the computer would be helpful or the name brand and model number specs of the name, wattage and model number of both psu's old and new could also be useful. You could start by removing all cards except video, all usb devices except mouse and keyboard, all drives. Just see if it will post like this and if you can enter setup/bios |

Re: Computer dies immediately on startup
Take out all of the computer components and only re-seat the bare essentials: Power supply, motherboard, cpu, one stick of ram, and videocard.
Also try clearing the cmos and removing the bios battery and put it back. What brand of power supply are you using? How many watts is it? |

![]() Thank you for your responses. The computer is a custom homebuild model with a 550 watt power supply (recently replaced) and an off-the-shelf box. As a desperate user, I decided to try everything carefully. The problem turned out to be the wire connections to the start button. It is a momentary switch, and I assumed that if I put the wires together, that would have the same effect as pressing the switch. NOT Apparently the connection has to be very solid. I resoldered the wires to the switch and the crate works now. Thank you again for your responses.Phil: |
