Won't post past DMI verify
Hi,
The system won't get past the Verify DMI Pool Data screen. I catch a brief glimpse of the Windows XP (.1 sec at best). Not hard drive related. I've tried to install on a various drives after fresh formats on some. I have a AMD 3000-64 Athlon unit I have tried the following to resolve the problem: 1. Put in new power supply; 2. Swapped hard drives (formatted but no OS install, because I ; 3. Disconnect extra drives; 4. Swapped video cards; 5. Cleaned up heat sink and cleared fans and case of dust; and 6. Taken out MOBO battery and cleared CMOS. At this point, I am looking at a Mobo, CPU problem, or RAM. Can a system even get to the Check DMI pool stage with a busted CPU or Mobo? Shouldn't I just be receiving a black screen and beeps if it is any one of these? Any help would be very much appreciated. Thanks. |

Re: Won't post past DMI verify
90% of the time this is drive related, have you tried another data cable to the hdd?
Disconnect the floppy, both power and floppy cable. Clear the cmos again make sure the computer is unplugged when doing this |

Re: Won't post past DMI verify
It can be a drive related issue, but you did disconnected the hard drive right? Sometime this could be a RAM issue. Most time if the ram is bad it would beep, most time if its a ram issue the computer will not go pass the post or will stay black screen but sometime I'll try to boot up.

Re: Won't post past DMI verify
Thanks for the help. I don't think that RAM is the issue. It is verified at boot and was never touched since installation. Never had a problem.
The drive cables may be at issue and I will try switching it around with another set. At this point that can't hurt. I have used several different drives. My question is whether a bad CPU or Mobo could ever get to the point of posting past the verify DMI stage? I would think that I would get fan noise only with a bad mobo and beeps for a bad CPU. Am I off on this? |

Re: Won't post past DMI verify
Quote:
Reformatted two drives and doing fresh windows install. Will go through initial blue screen set up and upon reboot the things shuts off after verify DMI 2. Settings for hard disk drive are not correct. Tried using correctly jumpered IDE (master) and checked Bios for recognition. Used a reformatted SATA as well (Seagate - website says it didn't need extra RAID drivers for F6 install). 3. Floppy diskette or CD in computer causing issue. CD in computer is Windows disc. Shouldn't be the issue. Tried different CD drives and disconnected floppy 4. Boot devices not set properly. Checked Bios. Drives seem correct and I have pulled battery on Bios for reset. 5. BIOS corrupt or misc. setting not set properly. Reset bios. (I don't think any default should send anything over the edge? Should it?) 6. Connections loose or disconnected. Connections on drive should not be loose because preliminary XP installation has occured. 7. Bad Hard disk drive or other bad hardware. Tried different drives, new power supply, dusted fans and heatsink, checked RAM and swapped video cards. My question remains, is there any way a defective MOBO or CPU can even post or do you get blank screen? Many thanks. |

Re: Won't post past DMI verify
I never had a mobo or cpu do that, my guess is it could possibly be a bad mobo, try this,,,,,,,
Remove all cables and cards have only psu 1 stick ram video card keyboard, mouse, monitor This is all you need to complete post and enter bios, if it still hangs at DMI verify try another keyboard and mouse, other then that I am out of ideas but if you are able to enter bios with this config then add one part back at a time till you find the offending one |

Re: Won't post past DMI verify
what psu is in it
brand wattage did you reset the cmos correctly turn the computer off remove the power lead from the back take the side off remove the cmos battery move the cmos jumper from pins 1 and 2 to pin 2 and 3 and the back to pins 1 and 2 replace the battery put the side on replug in the power lead boot the computer it would only need the raid driver with f6 if the drive was connected to a raid port you just need a sata to be set to run as ide in the bios

Re: Won't post past DMI verify
I have tried resetting all the jumpers and pulled the battery with little success. I think I am just going to get a cheap Phenom set up and call it a day on this.
I checked the CPU and the heatsink and the CPU were really stuck together and the paste had become quite tacky, so I think that may be the culprit (too much heat when windows kicks in). Fine temp at bios and pre-loading stage and then when it is actually in use it's getting too hot. |
