Hi all,

Please be aware I'm not PC gifted.

I have a 550w power supply and an ASUS P5LD2 - EAYZ motherboard with an Intel 945P chipset and currently a P4 630. Tried to install a Core 2 Duo E7200 to no avail, little green light comes on and stays on (light that tells you PC is 'doing' something), manged to break my old fan in process so whilst getting a new one in PC world guy there mentioned it may be my power supply but having checked I cannot find anything. Motherboard as far as I know should run Core 2 Duo so I'm baffled, or is it a case new chip is duff?

Any help greatly appreciated.

you may need a bios update for it to run the new cpu
check the bios updates on the asus d/l page for your board the update will say what upgrades and fixes is contained in it

Thanks for the quick reply.

Just checked the ASUS downloads but which one do I go for? Is there a specific one as it looks as I only have the P5LD2 motherboard nothing extra. Or do I ahve to update on my old bios? Please be aware that I'm new at this.

you have to make sure you are looking at the right d/l page for your m/b
click on the d/l tab to bring up the d/loads then the bios tab and check what the bios update covers
on the left you will see where to click for how to update the bios
print the instructions off or find them in your manual
if your m/board supports ez flash the update is simple and straight forward
if it's the dos flash it's a bit more complicated and you need to carefully follow the instructions
if it offers winflash ignore this option it has a high failure rate with dire consequences when it fails

OK I'm starting to get a wee bit nervous. My BIOS features are:

4mb Flash ROM, AMI BIOS< PnP, DMI2.0, SM BIOS 2.3, WfM2.0. Nothing about EZ flash etc and I'm twitchy about not being able to answer any more emails as I completely nobbled the BIOS, I have the potential to mess up the simplest of things.

look on page 4.4 in your manual or somewhere in that area it gives details of the bios upgrade
i could not be sure from this ASUS P5LD2 - EAYZ which m/b you have,so i could not look at the page to check anything

Thanks for all this. Now need to go away and ponder as everything quoted for updating BIOS refers to floppy disk drive, something I don't currently possess, can't exactly update something if I don't have the tools.

i think you will find the current day bios will not fit on a floppy anymore and you need a cd or usb stick

Beware of the motherboard revision.
On their site, http://www.asus.com/products.aspx?l1=3&l2=11&l3=185&l4=0&model=515&modelmenu=1
ASUS claims that "Only PCB R2.0(or higher) support Intel® Core™2 processor"
So, check your mobo for the PCB revision.
If it is something below R2.0, then bye-bye Core2Duo, and you will have to upgrade the motherboard.
If it is R2.0 or above the do the following:
Download the latest BIOS, copy it onto a USB Stick, reboot PC and, during the POST, press ALT + F2 and enter the BIOS flasher. From there you should be able to flash the latest BIOS from the USB stick

Thanks for that. I know you may think this a daft question but how do you check what revision number your board is? I have this sinking feeling that I have the initial board, nothing on box saying R2.0 or higher etc or is the number on the board itself?

Open the case, look at the motherboard.
Somewhere around the video card slot (I think), OR around the memory slots, OR at the bottom ot the motherboard, there should be a amall note about the revision. When I had this board, it was the revision 1.02, so I had co change it for my current one: P5KR

I also have revision 1.02, is this bad? If it is I think I'll have one of those enjoyable phone conversations with ASUS as it clearly states on the box that the board contained within is dual 2 core compatible, not the later board in the same box that is compatible. Or I am shooting from the hip and it's the second number that identifies the revision number ? Don't know and I'll await your guidance because on this matter you know more than me for which I am grateful.

yeah,
the text stating the revision, as I recall, is something like... REV 1.02 (in my case) - and it does NOT support the Core2Duo technology. (different voltages I recall)
The other revision is 2.01G

BUT.....
If on the box said "Dual core ready" than this doesn't mean it has to be "Core 2 Duo ready"
As there are those Intel dual cores called Pentium D. And the board DOES work perfectly with them The Pentium Ds were the previous generation dual core, and were much more energy-hungry, and did run very HOT.

So, the board does exactly what it says it does: works with dual cores. BUT it does not say it runs with Core 2 Duo.
