[SOLVED] Cpu Running Too Hot

I have a AMD X2 6400 Black Edition processor that's part of my new build. I've only been running it for 4 days. I installed it with Arctic Silver 5 and the HSF is a Zalman CNPS9700 LED. I run coretemp to check the the temperatures but I'm always getting around 53/48 idle so I'm too afraid to stress test it beacuse I don't want it to go past 60 degrees. I've removed and re-applied Arctic Silver 5 3 times already but no change. The case is a NZXT Apollo with 3 fans. I've heard of this processor running hot but I don't know what I'm doing wrong. I would like to get it down to the 30s-40s when idle. Please help.

Re: Cpu Running Too Hot

What motherboard? Could you confirm these temps in bios? Sometimes software temp monitors are not always accurate, try a different one such as speed fan

Re: Cpu Running Too Hot

The motherboard is a Gigabyte GA-MA770DS3 rev. 1.0. I haven't checked the temps in the bios yet but speedfan gave me the around the same temps whenI had it installed.

Re: Cpu Running Too Hot

I reapplied arctic silver and the BIOS temp is 47 but in windows it's at 53/46 idle. I even tucked all the cables behind the board tray and in the drive bay but still not as cool as it should be. Im lost and have no clue what else to do. Should I RMA the processor?

Re: Cpu Running Too Hot

looking at a review idle 35c underload 48c
they recommended an after market cooler be used with them
they pull a lot of watts 125 which usually translates into heat
did you follow the instructions for applying the paste,it will come down a few more degrees as the paste wears in

Re: Cpu Running Too Hot

The aftermarket cooler I'm using is a Zalman CNPS9700 LED and I have folled the instructions for arctic silver to a T but still no change. It really makes no sense for it to be this hot after everything I've tried. I am using an old IDE drive for the time being but should that affect cpu temp in any way?

Re: Cpu Running Too Hot

the hard drive should have no bearing
i found the zalman to heavey and would not tighten down enough to stop it slipping
users here swear by them i use it as a door stop

Just got off phone with AMD to RMA it. Heading to FedEx tomorrow morning to send it off. Any one know how long the RMA process usually takes?

Re: Cpu Running Too Hot

TBH I never had to rma a amd but I'm guessing aout 2 weeks with shipping and all. Please keep us posted on how you make out and don't get two worried if you see the same temps or near them, just post back.

Just out of interest was the computer stable? No freezes or shut downs? I know you said you were afraid to stress it but I think I would have just to see if the system was stable

Re: Cpu Running Too Hot

it's never froze or shut down and the closest I came to stressing it was playing WoW at full settings. The temps then were around 70/65. The video card is a geforece 8600.

Re: Cpu Running Too Hot

If you seen temps in the 70C range the computer should have become unstable, either lock up or some sort off bad behaivior, if you followed artic silvers instructions to a "T" and have decent case cooling its possible that the motherboards sensor is reporting the temps wrong.

If the computer is stable under stress the cpu is not overheating

Re: Cpu Running Too Hot

d/l this and run it,it does not rely on the m/b sensors,it sits in the tray and gives you current readings

Re: Cpu Running Too Hot

ok, amd called me an hour ago and told me that the processor was fine. he tested it in his msi mobo and his temps were 31 idle and 49 full load in bios and speedfan. He told me that it may have something to do with the power supply giving the motherboard or the processor too much power which could cause it to overheat. the powersupply is a rosewill rp600v2-s-sl 600w. could the power supply have anything to do with it? i also failed to mention before that the heatsink is hooked up to a zalman fanmate 2 set at full speed. if it's not plugged into the sysfan header on the mobo, could that mess up the sensors which could give me wrong temperatures?

Rosewill tends to make poor quality power supplies.
