Halts at IDE detection

Hello, hope someone can help with a preplexing problem.
Recently had some problems with a DVDrw drive which I assumed was in need of replacement.. not reading CD's but lately also not being detected in Windows (XP). I ordered a new drive and also decided to do a memory upgrade at the same time and fitted these items last weekend. After installation and upon rebooting the computer hung at "Detecting IDE..".
After trying various memory and drive configurations I got the computer up and running again with the new memory modules but it will only detect the HDD (IDE). As soon as I plug another drive into IDE channel 2 the pc hangs in the aforementioned way. Even setting another drive as a slave on IDE channel 1 (to the HDD) causes the same problem. Putting the old memory and the old opitical drive back in; still the same hanging problem. With just the HDD drive connected the pc works fine. The Bios is set to auto detect and seems to be operating normally. My thoughts are that the PSU is faultly.. It does provide power through all the leads but maybe cannot summon up enough power to supply more than one drive.. or the motherboard has developed a fault. Any advice or ideas welcome.
Thanks

Re: Halts at IDE detection

Tell us what drives you have on the Primary IDE, including type of drive, brand names of each, how the jumpers are set, and where on the ribbon cable each is located. Do the same for the secondary IDE channel if you have one. That should go a long way in assisting you.
