Is my motherboard dead or can it be fixed
I built a computer for the first time, using a ASUS P5N-E SLI motherboard, core 2 quad, 2 XFX 8500GT video cards, 2 gigs ddr2 XP Service Pack 2. It was working great for about 3 weeks until there was a power spike and the surge protector failed and the power supply died. Got a new Power Supply and powered it back up. I could not get anything on the monitor. The lights on the motherboard and the fans are running, after almost a minute I heard 4 beeps: one long, three short. I checked the beep codes (award bios) on the net and it means it is a video card problem. I tried the video cards on another board and they were fine. Is my board dead, is there anything else I can do to check it before I buy another one? I've already taken off everything and put them back on again.

Re: Is my motherboard dead or can it be fixed
If a power outage, maybe it also messed up the Bios setup menu. Might be worth trying to clear the cmos and see if that gets you further than you are now. Even if a long shot, worth a try. I am sure you are aware, it could have fried something in the board also. Report back with progress or lack thereof.

Re: Is my motherboard dead or can it be fixed
tumbleweed, I followed the instructions to clear the cmos but nothing changed.
cheesecake - don't have onboard video, tried 2 different cards in two different slots (Pcie2.0), did not work, worked fine on another computer Since I last spoke to you guys I read the motherboard belp on this site, it is pretty thorough and I get the impression it is dead but I haven't done all of the test yet thanks for your help |
