lightning struck my computer....it sucked

Hey guys, I am hoping that someone can help me out. I just got a new CPU a couple of months ago, and unfortunately lightning struck just outside the house last week, and blew my motherboard and my power source (sparks and smoke came out of the back).

I got a new motherboard put in (MSI 69n6gm series) and a new power source (the old one was 220 watts, this one is 250), but I am still having problems.

What will happen is that the computer will turn on, go to screen that says that windows did not start properly due to hardware changes etc etc, and it gives me the option to start in safe modes or normally. the first few times that i tried to start it normally, the whole thing just shut down. finally I waited until the 30 second countdown ended, and it started up ok... i thought that was wierd, but I could use the comp.

next thing that happened is that the computer shut down in the middle of operations, and when i tried to start it up again, it said that the boot disc was bad, install another one and try again. I opened it up, played with the cables and it started working again...but the same was as the first time.

now it wont start up, it only goes to the windows did not start screen, and anytime that I try to either wait or start windows in any mode, it just turns off.

My question is this: is the new motherboard malfunctioning, is it possible that the hard drive sustained damage, and now is sending some sort of signal to the comp to shut down, or is the new wattage of the power source causing some sort of problem......or the most likely possiblity is that I have no friggin clue what the problem is.

I would really appreciate any help that you guys could give me

Mark

Re: lightning struck my computer....it sucked

problem wise, could be mobo, hard drive, power supply, or windows just needs to be reinstalled.

normally when switching out a mobo, unless you get the same exact mobo, you need to reinstall windows clean or you'll have problems running windows. which what I would suggest is to back up all your data, then download and run a hard drive diag test, make sure the drive is ok. if it is, then perform a clean install of windows.

If it still gives your problems after that, then I'd say time to look at hardware, memory, mobo, and PSU.

Re: lightning struck my computer....it sucked

a lightening strike could have done much more damage then the psu and motherboard. you really need to check each individual componant in a known working system.

a window reinstall would be good as well

Re: lightning struck my computer....it sucked

This might seem like a foolish question on my part, but if your going to go low grade on equipment anyways, cant you just buy a completely new somewhat decent computer for like $100 bucks?

I am not sure how much you paid for that Motherboard seeing as it is either typed wrong or an old discontinued model....

But it seems like a bit of a waste in money and effort to try to fix something like that eh?

Yeah but the problem is that I am living in mexico as an english teacher, and I am basically broke. here computer parts can easily double what you pay in the states or in canada, and most of the **** is out of date anyways but what can I say I love the girls and the weather....expensive computer parts are a small price to pay

Thanks for all of the info guys. I am gonna do a clean install of windows and if that doesnt work out then you will see me back here. peace
