Startup noise

Hi,

I have noticed in the last few days that when I start up my PC, there is most often, a motor-like noise that lasts for a few minutes then dies away. The noise is from the computer Tower.

Secondly, I want to know about how I can speed up my PC. I find that the CPU gets to 100% most of the time and that the computer should probably start up faster. I have only used about 15% of hard drive. My processor is AMD Sempron 3000+ with 447MB RAM, which i think may not be enough but i would like to know any other ways that do not involve expenditure.

Do u have any ideas?
thankz

Re: Startup noise

to speed your pc up consider an investment in 2gig of ram 2x1gb sticks are very cheap these days, you will probably find the proccessor is working less after you install more memory.

as far as the noise next time you turn it on have the case open have a good listen to exactly where the noise comes from. i have had a few pc's at work where the hdd makes a "clunking" noise then windows magically became corrupt. needless to say hdd broke. if it is your hdd i suggest keeping your pc turned off until you get your hands on a spare and copy all your data over or even better "image" the disk.

hope that helps,

Re: Startup noise

If the noise could be coming from your heat sink fan. The fans do fail.

That can also be from the power supply.

Boot into Safe Mode (hit F8 during the Windows boot screen), and scan your PC for spyware and viruses that may be running in the background hogging the CPU. If you find the 100% CPU usage problem doesn't go away, download HijackThis: http://www.trendsecure.com/portal/en...ols/hijackthis

Do a scan, save the log and post it here: http://www.techsupportforum.com/secu...this-log-help/

After you get that checked out download Autoruns: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/s.../bb963902.aspx

On the Logon tab, disable the auto-startup for any programs that aren't essential for you when you boot into Windows, for example MSN Messenger.

Re: Startup noise

If the speed problem isn't solved already, you should definitely use only ONE antivirus software. They tend to use pretty much of the computer's resources. Uninstall 2 of the 3 antiviruses you have installed, and you should see a big speed improvement.

Dan

Re: Startup noise

Hi Dan,

thanks 4 your help, i only have one antivirus program now: The CA Security Suite. I downloaded Spyware terminator and it found one critical object that i removed permanently.
then i downloaded PC Speeder 3 from download .com and it is a small .com file that seems to have significantly improved the PC speed.

Lastly, I would like to know if you can suggest how to remove registry errors. I downloaded 2 registry cleaning programs that only fixed 20 errors in trial. I have CCleaner which does not find many registry errors like the other programs found eg. CCleaner only fixes about 10 errors at a time while these programs found 100s of errors.

Look forward to your reply.
