Loud screech/No Boot

Ok so i have 4 computers in my house, My desktop was running fine, Me and my buddy wanted to start playing Hellgate london, So i had to upgrade the desktop so it meet the minum requirments, So i went and bought a 512MB Vid Card, (/VisionTek/Radeon HD 2400 Pro) Installed in got the drivers, Got the game up and running, Played for 12hrs, On and off and had my computer freeze up on me 3 times, I went and got Speedfan, And it showed me that my 3rd sensor was running at 57-59C when i got to 60c it would shut off, My first 2 sensors where in the 33 C range, The third sensor was only getting hot when i was playing the game, And i noticed there was alot of dust in the CPU fan and front and rear exit fans, So i thought mabe if i cleaned the fans would cool it down a little bit, So i turn off the PC clean out the fans Pull the heat sink and CPU fan off the Prossor cleaned all that out and the other 2 fans, pluged it all back in and when i tryed starting the computer would start up and the immidelty shut down, I figured that i put the Heatsink on wronge and it was apply to my forse to the CPU, When i took it off the computer would come on, Not sure if all the way on but i no it would shut off imideitly like befor i finaly figured out how to get it on there where it would function properly, and come on, So i plug every thing back in, And turn on the computer and Now i get NOTHING, Expect a really loud screech comeing from the CPU area, Kinda like the sound a bomb would make falling from the sky,Just really high pitch, Mabe more like a Tea pot on the stove when the steam starts comeing out of it, Just really high pitch contuinsly getting louder, If i leave it on The Compastiors around the CPU start getting really hot and u can feel the heat coming off of them.Theres also a Burn smell comeing from the same area as the screech, So i took the heatsink off the cpu and that chaged nothing, so i started troubleshooting the problem to see if i could figure it out, Took the PSU out of the case to see if it was makeing the screeching noise, It waznt i took the new vid card out and used the On-bord Vid card to see if that was the problem and stil when i turn the computer on i get the screech and a amber light,And the amber light gose off after about 15secs,every thing seems to power on, Just get no signal to the monitor, no nothing, I unpluged the Fans from the MB to see if a fan was makeing the screeching noise, But after unpluging i still get the screech from the CPU area, (Kinda hard to get exact location of the screcch) so after i have unpluged the fans, and rulled out the PSU, I swaed out ram sticks and slots, Still no Signal/Loud screech and steal the smell of somthing burning,I then took out the CPU and fliped it over to find a Black spot about a inch wide in the center of the CPU, Not sure what the problem is, Never came across anything like this, The specs of my COmp are

Its a Hp pavilion 744v desktop

Let me no anyideas yall might have are anything eles i might need to do
befor i rule that its a fried MB/Prossor

Thanks Daniel

Did you reapply thermal paste after you cleaned the heatsink off?

Seriously looks (and smells) like a burnt out CPU.

Maybe you could put the CPU back in, clean off the existing thermal paste (if you haven't done that already), apply some new paste, put the heatsink back on and pray it'll boot.

Re: Loud screech/No Boot

You might get lucky on this one because most CPU's shut down when they get too hot. BTW, here are Artic Silver thermal paste instructions for you to use. I would not use any other type if it were mine.

Re: Loud screech/No Boot

i was just reading about the socket A prossors(462) Thay have vary low specs for the amount of forse that can be applyed from the heatsink and i think when i put the heatsenk on wroung i may have cracked it. This is what i read and i quote this..

Location Dynamic Static
Die Surface 445 N(100 lbf) 133 N(30 lbf)
Die Edge 44 N(10 lbf) 44 N(10 lbf)

"Those load limits are quite small compared to the load limits of Socket 478 processors. Indeed, they were so small that many users ended up with cracked processors while trying to remove or attach heatsinks for their fragile processors. It must be noted though that many processors were cracked by non-standard or non-certified heatsink solutions as many, although by no means all, Socket A processors were shipped as bare OEM processors in trays."

So im thinking theres a vary good chance that i may have cracked the Die when i tryed reattaching the heatsink, Still gonna try and do the thrmal paste just to see,

Thanks Daniel

Re: Loud screech/No Boot

Clean the thermal paste off with isoproptl alcohol and inspect it, look for burnt edges or bluenesss it its there its cooked. Socket A processors cannot take having powerd applied to them for even seconds without the heatsink sitting tight. I have installed near a hundred of these without problem but you have to make sure the step in the heatsink is facing the part of the socket that say's "462" or the heatsink will ride up on the socket and not touch the cpu die. If installed the wrong way around this almost always fries the cpu and in some cases damages the motherboard and with the noise you were hearing I suspect it did.

Very sorry for your misfortune and to be honest this is a very easy mistake to make that I have see several times
