processor upgrade?

I want to put upgrade the processor in my ASUS INC. NAOS 1.05 motherboard. Right now I have a
2.20 gigahertz AMD Athlon 64. I want to upgrade to dual core but don't know if it will work. Any information I can get about upgrading this would be nice.

Re: processor upgrade?

i have windows xp with an asus motherboard, i also have an amd athlon 64 x2 processor. i don't think it will be a problem with the physical exchange, as long as the sockets match, the heatsink and fan still mount properly and you use an adequate amount of thermal compound. the operating system will work with the processor, and asus supports dual core processors. . . see my info above. . . should be plug and play, maybe update some drivers in windows and possibly, if not the latest version, update the bios,(Asus has that pheonix award flash, or something like that bios updating program.) i don't know if your operating system will require a new serial number and reactivation, as with some, or all of your software licenses. upgrading certain components changes your hardware signature/fingerprint, some components more than others, possibly conflicting with your licensing and activation of software. . . i'm not sure, i'm still relatively new to this, but i'm looking to upgrade some components on my computer also, so it would be nice to find out what that would entail, and some of the consequences. let me know how it works out.

Re: processor upgrade?

NAOS 1.05 isn't an ASUS model number. Find the exact model (you can try Everest) and check on the ASUS website for CPU compatibility before upgrading that processor. Not all CPUs will work even if the sockets match, especially Athlons X2s which have several different CPU-steppings that are not compatible with all motherboards.

Re: processor upgrade?

OK the A8M2N-LA is a socket AM2 board so ranthru was right, any of the latest Athlon X2s should work without any problems. I was worried you might be running a socket 939 board which is more troublesome when it comes to CPU compatibility.

You shouldn't have to reactivate Windows since it's tied down to your motherboard, as far as I know.

ranthru, you can check out this article for info on upgrading and how it effects Windows OEM licences:

Re: processor upgrade?

hey underclocker, funny u should mention the compatibility issues with the 939 socket board. . . i've got the asus a8n-sli deluxe mb, with a 939 socket. . . i'm running the amd athlon 64 x2 4200 on it. . .. the system is about 2 years old now and i was thinking about upgrading the motherboard and processor to something that will give me options. . . it's very difficult to find 939 processors, at least it has been for me so far. . . the software licensing issue was really keeping me from going out and looking for new components so thanks for the heads up. . . .
