CPU Won't Boot
Two hours ago, my computer was fine. Drove to the airport and back and found the screen displaying the beginnings of the bios page -- listed the bios info and processor info, and at the bottom of the screen was the "Press DEL to enter setup" message. The middle of the screen was completely blank. Pressing DEL will not do anything.
Second computer in this room is working fine (thankfully). I put in my Windows XP Pro disk and tried to boot up with that, but reached the above-described partial bios page.that hangs. I turned the thing off and pulled, then replaced my RAM stick. Rebooted. Now the monitor is not getting a signal at all. I checked all cable connections and no change. CPU fan flying, hard drive light on, but nothing. I have an AMD Athlon 1150MHz F?? 200 Phoenix AwardBIOS v.6.00p6 DDR 512K AGP EP-8K9A7I motherboard Any of your thoughts would be DEEPLY appreciated. Murphy slapped me soundly this morning, as (of course) I have a hot project now dead in the water. |

Re: CPU Won't Boot
After reading through similar posts, I unplugged my cmos battery, waited half an hour, then replaced the battery and turned on the machine.
The cpu fan is on, but my monitor is still not receiving a signal from the box. No booting and no bios screen at all. All cord/cable connections have been confirmed at least ten times. The keyboard change (above) changed nothing. (And the substitute is the keyboard I am using right now on my other computer.) Is it too early for me to pour a stiff scotch and begin a sound panic? |

Re: CPU Won't Boot
Thank you. I did for the 20th time, but this time reseated my RAM chips. By the way, the chips are 512M (not K).
Now I am back to my original problem. The monitor now shows the following: Phoenix-AwardBIOS v6.00PG An Energy Star Ally 10/30/2003 For KT-400A DDR Chipset Main Processor: AMD Athlon (tm) 1500MHz (100x11.5), FSB200 [blank center screen, no RAM check] Press DEL to enter SETUP , E 10/30/2003-KT400A-8237-6A6LYPARC-00 No beeps, DEL key does nothing, ENTER key does nothing. HELP!!!!!!!! |

Re: CPU Won't Boot
This is weird.
A few moments ago, I heard my floppy crank up and looked over to see part of the rest of this "bios page" (sorry, I haven't a better description) had loaded. The RAM check ran. Memory Clock is DDR 266 It identified my IDE drives. Then I read the dreaded message: CMOS checksum error - defaults loaded Near the bottom, it gave my temps, etc. F1 key does nothing; DEL key did not enter setup. No beeps at any time. Just as unresponsive as before...just more white characters against the black screen. Thoughts? |

Re: CPU Won't Boot
I thank you for the ability to post my problem here and ask that you close my thread now. Tis a moot point.
After a wee bit of scotch sipping and web surfing, I decided my computer, which I built in 2003, should be put out of its obvious misery. So I've brought home a new motherboard, cpu and RAM and will rebuild a new one to accompany my less-than-a-year-old hard drive and dvd writers. If I get deep into my cups tonight, I just might convert the old motherboard into a wall clock... Again my thanks and kindest regards. |

dai, were you ever the prophet here. My "old" psu was less than 6-months old. I bought the mobo and cpu and assumed the psu would be fine. It wasn't. Bought a new one of those and the computer is working like a charm -- typing from it now.
One thing I did learn was that the thermal pad that came with my cpu was worthless. Heated up to 60c in less than 10 minutes. Scraped that off, cleaned the cpu and heatsink with high-grade isopropyl alcohol, and applied Ceramique. MAN, did that EVER make a huge difference! I doubt you fellows have a complete understanding of how much I appreciated the ability to post here, the suggestions you offered, and your patience of my additional comments as I tried to rationalize this mess. Many thanks and best wishes for a wonderful weekend ahead. Deborah
