Unknown Problem, little help here.
Okay so I just bought a new motherboard, a Asus Striker II Formula, right? So I install it.. hook everything up.. and I get nothing, everything comes on but then nothing happens after that.. no video, no post.. no beeps.
So I am thinking the motherboard is defective.. but to make sure I didnt accidently break something during install.. I tried several video card combination.. tried video card on my old motherboard.. (got video, posted.. but it shut itself down shortly after since I had no cooling on the processor) So heres what I did.. set up a motherboard outside the new case, while the new motherboard was mounted in the new case. My old Motherboard is a striker Extreme.. so I put my quad core (Q6600 Go) on it, my video card (BFG Nvidia 8800 GTS 640mb) and one stick of dominator 1066 DDR2 ram.. and I got to post Now I installed all of that into the new motherboard and again it wouldnt post, no video.. everything came on but no post or video. I tried different ram and a different processor in the new motherboard as well and still got no post.. sometimes it will turn on.. then turn itself off.. then once you turn it on a second time. It stays on. So did I get a defective motherboard or am I doing something wrong? If I got a defective motherboard going to RMA it this evening.. assuming I cant get it working. thanks for any help. |

Re: Unknown Problem, little help here.
Have you tried the new motherboard outside of the case, in case something is shorting underneath ??
IS the power supply sufficient for the new board ?? and have you made sure that you plugged ALL power connectors where required ??

Re: Unknown Problem, little help here.
yeah i tried the motherboard outside the case as well, i made doubly sure that i hooked the power up correctly.. the power supply is a modular 700 watt Ultra, so I dont think it wouldnt be getting not enough power.. ive tried running the new motherboard without anything entirely in it.. cept a processor and ram and video card... nothing else at all hooked up to it.. and it still refuses to post at all.

Re: Unknown Problem, little help here.
If you have everything hooked up properly including the ATX connector, the PSU/Heatsink/Fan to motherboard, molex connector to motherboard and it still won't do anything, most likely you got a bad board. I would RMA that one. BTW, your CPU is clear down and the heatsink/fan snapped in tightly, aren't they?

Re: Unknown Problem, little help here.
I have liquid cooling so the liquid cooler wasn't on it when I was doing the testing.. though I THINK i might of found the culprit though I am not sure how.. but the damage might of already been done to the board.. I put my old board into the case and began hooking things up one by one.. when i got to the floppy drive connection.. boom, same thing happened.. push power.. would flick on for a second.. then off.. press it again and it would stay on.. so i think the floppy drive is shorted out.. and due to the fact I didnt catch on sooner.. the board is shot because I didnt unhook that.. thankfully though it didnt ruin my old board, so I got that working at least.. until I can RMA and get a replacement

Re: Unknown Problem, little help here.
a faulty floppy is unusual in so far as it would stop booting unless either the ribbon cable was reversed or the power plug was not seated properly.
badly fitted psu connector would immediately cause your power supply to shut down .. a reversed ribbon cable could do damage to the floppy controller although I have never seen this happen. usually just get the floppy led permanently on as the system boots. keep us informed and Good Luck .. fingers crossed that you have no permanent damage edit : .. if you put your new mobo to work outside the case with nothing in it at all, it will or should power on ... If it doesn't make sure you have put the front panel wires in the correct places .. sometimes they are known to slip down the side of the pin rather than over it not making the required connection. if you put your CPU, Heatsink (+ fan/cooler) and Speaker then power on it should post and beep at you .. if it doesn't then more than likely you have a faulty board.

Re: Unknown Problem, little help here.
Well I tried outside the case with just the CPU, Ram and Video Card, all hooked up correctly.. power came on, didnt reboot.. but nothing happened, nothing.. tried reseting the bios, still nothing... with the floppy drive connected.. it shuts itself off, but on reboot.. stays on.. so I am just going to RMA it... then when I get the new one.. try it outside my case before I break everything down again.

Re: Unknown Problem, little help here.
Start off with an absolute minimum .. now that you're pretty sure the floppy is duff , dump it .. a new one will only cost a few bucks anyway ..
like I said earlier .. NO CPU and hooking up the power will allow the power on / off circuit to be checked .. Add CPU plus Cooler ( if it's AMD I don't know how long it will last without one .. Intel used to throttle down if it got too warm but my advice is NEVER run a CPU without cooling) anyway CPU + cooling plus speaker .. should power on and whistle that it has no memory, Power Off and add memory .. should now whistle that it has no VGA when powered on. Add VGA + Monitor .. should run through the post routine .. then add your stuiff one by one from there Good Luck and keep us informed as to how it goes
