Re: Computer Build running slow

umm... it could be that the temperature sensor on your CPU is malfunctioning, and the processor is purposely slowing down in accordance to the incorrect temperature reports. This wouldn't be the first time I've heard of something like that.

Re: Computer Build running slow

After my computer has been sitting turned off for awhile (6+ hours), and I start it and immediately go into BIOS, the temperatures starts at around 35-37 C... does a CPU heat up from room temperatures that quickly, The inside of the case when I start up the computer is 25 C or less... I guess my question is, can a CPU heat up 12 C in 15 seconds... obviously unless my temperatures reading is messed up it can... I would just like to make sure that nothing is wrong with the temperature reading (even though it is probably very unlikely) before I invest in another CPU fan... Now after my third attempt at installing the CPU Fan the temps are around 45 C under idle conditions...

So after 3 tries at installing the fan the temperature has always been between about 45 and 50 C. Either I can't follow simple directions or there has got to be something else wrong... (The third time I followed the directions posted earlier exactly and that gave me the best results about 5 C cooler but that is still to hot I think...)

Re: Computer Build running slow

if it is the temp sensor's problem, it's not the fan that you need to replace. The sensor's in the CPU itself, so you'll need to replace that if the problem is as I mentioned above. I'm not sure if it's guaranteed, though, you'll have to check under warranty info.

Re: Computer Build running slow

Is there anyway to test if its the sensor in the CPU and not the fan thats the problem... It would be pointless to send it back... wait 2 weeks... and have them send me the same CPU back saying they couldn't find anything wrong with it...

It's not the fan. Unless you're seriously overclocking, the stock fan shouldn't be a problem, no matter how much noise it makes (within reasonable levels, of course)

They are? Well, I must be mistaken, then. Well, then, I suppose you have to replace it? Unless I'm mistaken again?

what cpu is in there a cpu can go from 10-90 in a few seconds
do you have it plugged in on the cpu header

Re: Computer Build running slow

After redoing the thermal paste and putting the fan on for the 3rd time the BIOS temps are down to about 47 or 48 C which is about 2 or 3 degrees cooler then before... however that is still pretty high for temperatures. I read on another forum that some motherboards read the temperatures wrong for some CPU's and they sometimes provide updates if you update your BIOS... I am just wondering whether I should take a chance on updating BIOS (I saw 2 BIOS updates on the Motherboard manufacturers website)

The reason I think it is possibly the fan is because It seems like the pins never latch down on the CPU straight... it is also possibe the one of the cheap plastic pins has broke and won't latch down all the way... however after some struggle every time I was able to get the fan to latch tight so I am not sure. Either way I will never buy a fan that attaches to the motherboard this way again... in order to get it to latch you have to push the pins down in the opposite corners and I have to apply a lot more pressure then I would like to...

I am using a Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 2.4 GHZ and I have not attempted any overclocking... the Fan I am using is a Thermaltake Silent 775D...

Re: Computer Build running slow

i got fed up of having to pull the computer apart to keep relocating the pins and went to a bolt down h/sink and fan

Re: Computer Build running slow

That's interesting, my stock fan works well even WITH overclocking (when OC'ed to 2.66 it gets ~27C)

Re: Computer Build running slow

i found with the asus ezycool on the back of the m/b it made the m/b just that much thicker which was a problem for the pins going through far enough to latch

Re: Computer Build running slow

Well... I once again tried reapplying the thermal paste and reseating the fan... I must have done a decent job this time because the temp has dropped to 40C - 42C during idle which is almost 10C cooler. However I still think it should be cooler then that... My case temp is usually 25C like I previously stated and never gets hotter then 30C... I would think I should be able to get the idle temperature down to around 35 C... do you think that is a good estimate of where it should be?

I also purchased a new fan that I am going to try tomorrow, I will let you know if it helps with the temps...

Re: Computer Build running slow

it sounds about right the cpu is usally 10-12c above the m/b temp

Re: Computer Build running slow

I purchased a new fan and installed it today. My temps are now around 35-37 C while idling... However some of my applications are still running slow... is there anything else I can do... It is pretty sad when my 3 year old laptop with half a gig of ram runs my Cubase program faster then my Quad Core with 4GB of Ram...

I also am still seeing an Add remove hardware icon on the bottom right of my taskbar that gives me the option to remove both my SATA hard drives... it obviously will not let me remove the device because it says it is running but I am wondering why the option is there at all... any help on either of these issues would be appreciated...

and thanks for the help getting my temperatures down a little...

Re: Computer Build running slow

the m/b probably supports hot remove is why you see the icon as you pointed out i don't think it would be advisable to remove while running
check for an infection

Re: Computer Build running slow

first of all: so it is the fan. huh. guess I was wrong, then.

second: i have no idea why, but I don't think it's supposed to happen.

Re: Computer Build running slow

Yeah I found out that my motherboard supports hot swapping of SATA drives... that solves that "problem"... however it seems as if one program still runs really bad... and my temps are not back to idling at 43 C... still lower then before but higher then I would like them to be...again...
