system wont boot after cpu upgrade.
ok. sold my E6750(dual core) straight off the mobo. immediately went down to the local comp shop and bought a Q6600(quad core). popped it in and nothing. the mobo powers everything on the board, fans turn on, evrything seems fine except no boot, no beeps, no video. unplugged the graphics card and tried on-board video, nothing. thought it might be the new cpu so I popped in an old celeron D, still nothing. Highly suspect the board! any thoughts.

Re: system wont boot after cpu upgrade.
This is a stab in the dark, but have you gone to the website of the maker of your board? Sometimes either newer CPU's and/or bugs related to older CPU's can prevent a post. The fact our fan a cpu fans come on tell me the board isn't completely dead. though have you tired yanking out the memory and seeing if you get the beeps associated with no memory installed? this is a way to see if your motherboard is on lifesupport or possible has a pulse.
Also, Not sure of what chipset you are running, but when i was out shopping for a C2D, the only prerequisite was that the board supported Quads even though I was buying a e6400 to pair with it. I don't know anything about the celeron D, but as far as the quad, many offer bios updates to either support it or improve bugs associated with it. If your board is a 945 chipset, I don't think you can run it period. Don't quote me, but the 945 is outdated and they are trying to keep it alive with a BS 1333fsb (via overclocking) stated right on the motherboards. My chipset is a 965 and support quads up to 1066fsb. Anything with 1333fsb should support all Q6600's. Anyhow, just got the latest CPU update for your board so here it goes. Re: system wont boot after cpu upgrade.
WOH. I got it running, so strange tho. I went out and paid $210 for a new mobo (asus P5E-VM HDMI). put it together and guess what the same problem!!! ok atleast now I knew
it wasnt the board. so thought it might be the cpu, but its brand new I thought. so I pulled all ram off except for one stick no hdd no nothing except for the cpu. and still nothing, so I tried clearing the cmos on the new board and WOW it booted so sweet to hear that single mobo beep. turned it off and put all the ram back in and no boot. tried puting one stick at a time back and long story short, when the ram stick in slot 3 is in it wont boot,. Why is this so? bad ram? never seen ram do this, it worked fine with other cpu b4 swap. maybe I damaged it in swap. |

Re: system wont boot after cpu upgrade.
asus P5E-VM HDMI (nice board)
some ram just doesn't get along with some boards. It happens. To say it's bad by only testing it in one board is premature but after a couple you start to get the picture. hey if it's brand ram, you can probably get a new stick under the lifetime warranty. SMZ Quote:

Re: system wont boot after cpu upgrade.
Tried the stick in both boards. didnt work both times. same symptom.
Im through with generic ram, looking at getting some performance ram. DDR 800. what would you guys recommend? nothing to expensive, just not the cheap crap I already have. What does the numbers mean in regards to latency? Thanks for the willingness to help. Godbless.

Re: system wont boot after cpu upgrade.
I use corsair. With the latency numbers, the lower the numbers the
faster the speed. After that it gets real confusing., for me at least.

Re: system wont boot after cpu upgrade.
Corsair is one of my favorites. If you are looking to save $$$, I would stay with the value select line.
Kingston also has an entry level line called Value Ram. This is the stuff they sell at best buy with part numbers starting with KVR (Kingston value ram) A big thing in past memory that wasn't advertised all that much was high density vs low density. I think that only affected DDR1 though. You could go through 5 boards till one of the high density generic sticks worked. My advise is the same as Manic. Corsair C4 is by far the best. One thing about them, is many online stores have large rebates for these guys. Fry's.com had the same ram I paid way more for 6 months ago for $39 after rebate for 2GB (1gb x2) This is the best stuff 4-4-4-12 @ 2.1v. I don't look past PC6400 personally. I also have Kingston HyperX DDR2 ram in my server also 4-4-4-12. But a little surprise came my way. I bought 2GB of Kingston Valueram $37.99 for 2GB (1gb x 2) with no rebate and put that in my AMD Linux box. Would you believe that box is overclocked to a point where the ram is running at 806mhz (pc5300 rated at 667mhz) No heatsinks or anything. Well that's about it. I'd stay away from PQI and OCZ personally. I've always liked Crucial (micron), they've been around longer then almost anyone. if you're not in a hurry, check this site daily. my favorite bargain site in the world. the guy does it for free and has been doing it for years. He posts coupon codes, rebates, and links you right to the best bargain in town offline and online. I am not advertising him since it's a free site, simply recommending if you want to hold out for some good stuff at a great deal. Right now I just checked. Newegg has the Corsair we're recommending for $34.99 after rebate with free shipping / This is top notch 4-4-4-12 / 2GB Dual DDR2 800mhz Ram. Click Here to See Here's the Bargain Site BENSBARGAINS Have fun!, SMZ Quote:

Re: system wont boot after cpu upgrade.
Thanks for the help again. you guys are great. With the ram shopping tho, Im actually in Australia, forgot to mention. i have my ways of discount shopping, I do alright. prices just got really cheap in 2008 anyway, think it has to do with the strong aussie dollar, worth 95c US.
GodBless. (Got Jesus, I hear its hell without him) |
